Family legend states that Anthony promised his slaves freedom after he and his wife, Ann, died. Roughly seven months after Anthony's death on 27 December 1847, two slaves named Bill and Hardin, murdered Ann, aged 64, with a fire poker as she was mending one of their shirts. The slaves were apprehended. One was hanged, and the other severely punished.
Ann's grave, like Anthony's, is encircled by an iron fence, and is in a cemetery on a hill on High Street in Logan, W.V. Ann's gravestone, though, is well preserved. The inscription states:
