TALLEYRAND

Officially his paternity belonged to his mother's husband, Charles Delacroix, but even in his own lifetime his paternity was subscribed to Talleyrand. Fourteen years younger than his other four siblings, his mother was the much younger (by seventeen years) wife of an ailing politician. Charles Delacroix was succeeded as minister of foreign relations by Talleyrand, who took up residence at the Hôtel de Gallifet with the Delacroix family in autumn of 1797. As Duff Cooper observed in his biography of the statesman, Delacroix’s paternity "was generally ascribed to Talleyrand, and the theory was supported by a strong facial resemblance and by the fact that in the early days of his career the young artist was always in receipt of very valuable patronage and support from some mysterious and powerful source."

You seem to have him confused with his father; his mother was not Amice de Gael, as she was in fact his wife! Isabella was Robert's (the elder) only wife (Godehut de Toeni was once incorrectly said to have been his first wife, but this has been proven spurious.

She is commonly said to have died in childbirth in 1085, but this is based on the same late, spurious charter which calls her daughter of the Conqueror -- which she was not. In fact, Orderic says William's wife survived him, as his widow sent alms to the monks of Ely shortly after his death. She had issue:

(1.2) Reynold de Warrenne, b.ABT 1075 & d.AFT 1107. He inherited lands in Flanders from his mother.

(2) Gerbod II, Earl of Chester, acceeded 1070 & d.1187. He m.1054 Ada. Gerbod then killed Arnold of Flanders in the Battle of Cassell in 1071, for which, in penitence, he went to Pope Gregory VII in Rome to submit to punishment. He was sentenced to have his hands cut off, but pardoned because of his steadfastness, and sent instead to Hugh, the abbot of Cluny, under whom he became a monk. He had issue:

(3) Frederick of Trumpington, murdered 1070 by Hereward. Called "Fredericum germanum Comitis Willelmi de Warennia" as well as "frater", this probably refers to brother-in-law, taking into account the date of death and his name, which would be an almost unique name for a Norman at this time. It would not be odd to see a Fleming named Frederick however, which makes his identification as Gundred's brother likely.

[I have heard parson Robert Davenant say that Mr W.Shakespeare here gave him a hundred kisses.] Now Sr. Wm would sometimes when he was most pleasant over a classe of wine with his most intimate friends. e.g. Sam Butler (author of Hudibras) & c. say, that it seemed to him that he writt with the very spirit that Shakespeare, and was *seemed* contentended enough to be thought his Son: he would tell them the story as above. [in which way his mother had a very light report, whereby she was called a whore.]"

Thomas Hearne says in 1709: "Twas reported by Tradition in Oxford that Shakespear as he us'd to pass from London to Stratford upon Avon, where he liv'd & now lies buried, always spent some time in ye Crown Tavern in Oxford, which was kept by one Davenant who had a handsome Wife, & lov'd witty Company, tho' himself a
reserv'd and melancholly Man. He had born to him a Son who was afterwards Christen'd by ye Name of Wm.  who prov'd a very Eminent Poet, and was knighted (by ye name of Sr. William Davenant) and ye said Mr. Shakespear
was his God-father & gave him his name. (In all probability he got him)"

John Spence adds in 1726: "That notion of Sir William Davenant being more than a poetical child only of Shakspeare, was common in town; and Sir William himself seemed fond of having it taken for truth."
