I thought it might be of interest to others to know where the "TAPS" came from and how it started.

TAPS, the series of musical notes played at all military funerals, was born of grief and continues everlasting-----
It began in 1862 when a Union Army Captain, Robert Ellicombe, was with his men near Harrison's Landing, Va.
The Confederate Army was opposite this narrow strip of land. During the night Capt. Ellicombe heard the moan of a soldier
who lay mortally wounded on the field. The Captain decided to risk his life to bring the stricken soldier to medical attention. Crawling on his stomach through gunfire, he reached the soldier and pulled him toward his encampment.
Reaching his own lines, the Captain discovered the confederate soldier was dead. He lit a lantern and suddenly caught his breath and went numb with shock. It was his own son.
The boy had been studying music in the south when war broke out. Without telling his father, he enlisted in the Confederate Army. The following morning, the heartbroken father asked permission of his superoirs  to give his son a full military burial despite his enemy status. His request was partially granted.
The request for the Army band to play a funeral dirge for his son was turned down since the soldier was a Confederate. Out of respect for the father, they said they would give him one musician. The Captain chose a bugler to play a series of musical notes on a piece of paper found in the pocket of his son's uniform.
Those few notes were the haunting melody we now know as "TAPS"
