Petersfield Apprentices

The following information has been transcribed from the Parish Records fiche purchased from the Hampshire Record Office which is subject to copywrite. In Bishops Laney's Will of 24th February 1690 it was bequeathed that on Lady Day every second year the yearly rent,from his Estate in Bramshot, was paid by the Rector of the Day, to be used for apprenticing a deserving Petersfield young person in a trade. The other year it was to be paid for a Buriton Boy. The following list is of the persons who were recipients of this endowment in Petersfield.

1st Oct 1729, 5. 4. 6 paid to Mr. JOHN MEERS,Mayor of Petersfield in order to apprentice NICHOLAS PAGE son of NICHOLAS PAGE Clerk of Ye Parish.

9th May 1731, 4. 0. 0 paid to Mr. ROBT. LIPSCOMB Mayor of Petersfield for apprenticing ?-----? ADAMS of that Burrough.

10th Aug 1733 5. 10. 0. was paid for apprenticing LEWIS SOMERS? to ANTHONY PALMER of Amesworth Coal Merchant.

14th June 1735 5. 10. 0. was paid for apprenticing DANIEL BROWNE to WILLIAM BRICKNELL, a Carpenter of Petersfield.

24th May 1737 5. 10. 0. paid for apprenticing ROBERT ADAMS to SAMUEL BENESS? of Harting.

5th Jun 1739 5. 10. 0. paid for apprenticing the son of  Widow VERMINER to JOHN ELSTONE.

30th March 1741 5. 0. 0. paid for apprenticing THOMAS the son of THOMAS HUNT to the said THOMAS HUNT Cordwainer of Petersfield.

11th June 1743 5. 0. 0. paid for apprenticing JOSEPH YOUNG son of WILLIAM YOUNG to EDWARD BIRCH a Taylor.

10th Aug 1745 4. 19. 0. paid for apprenticing HENRY DEAR to his brother PHILIP DEAR a Currier.

1747 5. 0. 0. paid for apprenticing JOHN GAMMON of Petersfield to BENJAMIN VOKES a Shoemaker of Harting Ssx.

1749 5. 2. 3. paid for apprenticing JOHN STONE of Petersfield to JOHN PAPLING a Pipemaker of Petersfield.

MEMORANDUM: Rents for the years 1750 and 1751, amount of 10. 13. 4. were expended in repairs of the Barn, by Order of Mr. BILSON, The Trustees.

13th Oct 1775 (For the year 1767) 8. 0. 0.towards apprenticing JOSEPH LIPSCOMBE of Petersfield (of which 6.5.0. was the yearly rent.) to WILLIAM COMPTON a Cordwainer.(Received and signed by Wm.Compton)

MEMORANDUM:- That 24. 8. 0. having been paid for the last three apprenticships in Petersfield, as no one could be found who would take an apprentice for the yearly rent only, which never amounted to more than 6.5. 0. the rent of four years hath been exhausted in three years and that nothing remained due to Petersfield for the year 1769.

19th June 1781 (For the year 1777) 10. 10. 0.(6 being the annual rent) paid towards apprenticing WILLIAM HODGES of Petersfield to JOHN MARMAN Stone Mason.(Received and signed by John Marman.)

MEMORANDUM:- That 20. 10. 0. was  paid for the last two apprentices from Petersfield, PETER SWANN and WM. HODGES as the yearly rent alone would not suffice to apprentice them. Hence the rent of three years amounting to 18.0.0. was exhausted in those two years. (Besides fifty shillings were paid for them by the Rector) so that nothing remained due from Bishop Laney's Charity to the Borough of Petersfield for the year 1779.

20th Oct 1790 (For the year 1785) 6.0.0. was paid by Rev. Mr. Ralfe for apprenticing DAVID TODMAN to his father WILLIAM TODMAN a Blacksmith of Petersfield.

26th Oct 1792 (For the year 1787) 6.0.0. was paid by Rev. Mr. Ralfe for apprenticing THOMAS WALLER to PHILIP DEAR a Currier of Petersfield.

MEMORANDUM:-17th Aug 1789, That the sum of 15.17. 0.halfpenny was this day paid to JAMES JENNINGS Carpenter for a new Barn floor, new gates and other repairs on the farm at Bramshot, materials and labour. Received and signed by James Jennings.
