Flaunden Village

Flaunden Village, 1940s
Flaunden village history
Flaunden is a small village in Hertfordshire, next door to Bovingdon.
It has remained relatively unchanged, with many of the houses being hundreds of years old.
The original site of the village was one and a half mile to the south, in the Chess river
valley. A small church was here, built in the 1200s, and a few cottages. Nothing now
remains of this, the church now being rubble. The village probably migrated up the hill
because the valley was prone to flooding.
The church of St Mary Magdalene was built in 1838, near to the centre of the present
village. The villagers were originally workers on the Estate of Lord Chesham, who lived at
the nearby Latimer House.
A Roman villa stood near the old village, at Latimer, with a Roman Road passing through
the present village on it's way through Bovingdon to Hemel Hempstead.

Flaunden Church Records (Burgin Extracts)
The church records survive back to the early 1700s, when the old church was in use, although older records are available as "Bishop's Transcripts". The current church records date back to 1838.

(1841-1902)
These records were copied from the current burials book of the church. I have only
included information older than 100 years here, although newer information is available.

CENSUS (Complete census transcript)
I transcribed this census from the microfilm copy kept at Hemel Hempstead library. I have
tried to keep the style and spellings as close to the original as possible. Some of the
handwriting was very faint and hard to decipher, so there may have been some mistakes
made!
