| This was my first and only new bike. I can't remember if I got it for Christmas or my birthday.
My birthday was exactly one month after Christmas so it could have been either. On the night
of the day I received it, I took it in the house and sit it beside my bed where I could look at it.
I remember reaching out from the warmth of my bed and running my fingers over it's smooth,
shiny metal. I would feel the rough tread on it's new, clean, black tires. I flipped the switch
on its headlight and the whole room lit up. I'm sure my eyes were lit up just as bright. It was
so beautiful, bright red and snowy white. It had 26 inch wheels and coaster breaks. Needless
to say, it was hard to go to sleep that night.
On the first school day after receiving it, [I can't remember if it was the next day or not] I rode
it to school. There was a long grade that I had to ascend and I can vividly remember standing
up and pumping the bike up that hill and repeating, out loud, over and over, "Oh Boy, Oh Boy,
Oh Boy, my very own new bike." I can't remember being that excited over anything new,
before or afterward.
I remember finding out somehow, later, that it cost $36.00. That was a lot of money back
then and I don't know how my parents could afford it, but they must have loved me, at least a
little, to get it for me.
