Left to Right: Monte, Amy, [on phone] Elmer Gregory, Florence, Ila, Amos Carpenter,
Albert, [Ab] and Effie Gregory. Dave Carpenter is asleep on the floor.
Amos Carpenter was my grandfather and he was, among other things, a photographer.
From what I understand he was more than just a casual photographer because he
developed his own film and sold many photographs. In Florence [Harman] Carpenter's
journal she states that they made quite a lot of money from making pictures. He took this
picture and he is also in the picture, which was quite an accomplishment for those days.
Notice his hands in this picture. He is touching two electrical contacts together to set off the
flash.
Ila Carpenter, the little girl in the center, is my Aunt and she told me many stories about
the family and one thing that always interested me was their picture making techniques.
She helped to develop the film and helped to print the pictures. She gave many details,
which I still have on audio and video tape, of the process that was used then. Quite
primitive by today's standards but modern for those days of around 1910.
This picture was inside the home of Ab and Effie [Harman] Gregory near Steelville, MO.

is buried in the Liberty Cemetery near Steelville, MO.

16, 1871 to Job and Catherine [Mallow] Harman, in or near Steelville, MO. She was about
