Odbert Beecher Phillips was born at Gaines, Upshur County, West Virginia on the 17th day of April 1896, the son of Sydney E. and Ida Young Phillips.  He married Anniee B. Colerider on June 22, 1920 at French Creek W. Va..  He taught two terms of school in the public schools of Upshur County.  After marriage he operated a general store in French Creek before being elected to the Office of Clerk if the Curcuit Court of Upshur County in November of 1932.  Mr. Phillips served a six year term and was elected to a second term of six years and served until July of 1942 when he asked for release to enter the military service.

A veteran of both World War I and II, Mr. Phillips, in December of 1917 left school while enrolled at West Virginia Wesleyan to volunteer his service to his country.  He was assigned to Battery "E", 67th Artillery, CAC where he attained the rank of Sergeant.  He served with the American Expeditionary Forces in France.  He likewise volunteered his services in World War II, and after graduating from Officer Candidate School in Miami Beach Florida and Combat Intelligence School in Harrisburg Pa., was assigned to the Army Air Corps with a bombardment group as Combat Intelligence Officer.  In his capacity he attained the rank of Captain, Army Air Corps.

After the end of the World War II, he was employed for a period of six years as Payroll Clerk for the Buckhannon River Coal Company of Adrian W. Va..  He then was appointed Postmaster at French Creek, W. Va..  In which capacity he served until retirement.  He is a life member of the D.A.V., a Mason and a Rotarian (Past President Buckhannon, W. Va. Club).  He has been a member of the Methodist Church since childhood and has served the church in various capacities.

Corporal, Battery A, 283rd Field Artillery Battalion, U.S. Army.  He was born June 12, 1914 at French Creek.  He was inducted March 28, 1942 and was honorably discharged on March 12, 1945.  while serving he received the European-Afican-Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon and the Good Conduct Medal.

Staff Sergeant, Headquarters Company, First Infantry Regiment, Sixth Division.

He was born October 23, 1921 at French Creek.  He entered the service on February 1, 1845 and was honorably discharged on August 9, 1946.  While serving he received the Asiatic- Pacific Service Medal, Philippine Liberation Serice Medal, Good Conduct Medal, World War II Victory Medal and rthe Occupation Medal Japan.

JOHN-FRANKLIN PHILLIPS

Private First Class, Battery "C" 771st Field Artillery Battalion, XLL Corps, U.S. Army.  He was born August 6, 1924 at French Creek.  He was inducted on May 13, 1943 and honorably discharged on December 31, 1945.  He served in Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe.  While serving he receioved the Good Conduct Medal, American Theater aservice Medal, Euopean-African-Middle Eastern Theater Service Medal with four Bronze Stars and the Victory Medal.

A Graduate from Buckhannon-Upshur High School . Basica Training was at Camp Shelby, Miss.

Received his basic training at Camp Blanding FL. Folder contains a newspaper clipping from the Buckhannon Record May 3, 1945. He was a student prior to enlistment. Burial: 1/29/1949

Winsor L. Phillips Shelburne Falls

Winsor L Phillips 58 of 10 High St died yesterday enroute to Larren Memorial Hospital.

He was born in Conway July 10, 1909 son of Winsor L and Rose (Burnham) Phillips.  A resident of Shelburne Falls most of his life, he was a 20 year veteran of the armed forces, having served both in the Army and the Air Force.  In recent years he was employed by  the Prophylactic Brush Co, in Florence as a die machinist.

He was a member of Kennedy-Chamberlain VFW Post and Trinity Fellowship.

He is survived by his widow the former Ellen Kenndy; a son John of Marlboro; two sisters Mrs. Madeline Mithcell and Mrs Ethel Mitchell of Shelburne Falls; two grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be tomorrow at 2PM in the Johnson Funeral Home.

Military Honors will be conducted by Kennedy-Chamberlain Post.  Burial will be in Arms Cemetery.  Friends may call at the funeral home today from 2 - 4  and 7 - 9 PM.

Military Service

At the age of 18 he enlisted (October 8, 1927) in the United States Army at Fairhaven, Conn.. He was a Private First Class in Battery H, 11 Coast Artillery and was eligible as a 2nd Class Gunner. He completed one years service and was Honorably Discharged on October 11, 1928 by reason of "expiration of service".

On June 27, 1941 he once again enlisted into the Army and was a Private in Company "D" 36th Training Battlion and was transferred to the Enlisted Reserves Corp. on September 23, 1941. On January 25, 1942 at Fort Devens he enlisted into United States Army Air Force and was assigned to 1010th Army Air Force Base Unit were he was an Airplane Armorer Technician. On April7, 1942 he departed for Europe and was part of the Air Offensive in Europe and Western Europe. During this service he received the "Good Conduct Medal", the American Defense Service Medal and the European African Middle Eastern Theater Campaign Ribbon with two Service Stars. He was Honorably Discharged on February 7, 1945 for personal reasons.
On September 1, 1950 he enlisted in the Air Force Reserves at the Rank of Airman First Class. His duty assignment was with the 564th Field Maintenance Squad at Otis Air Force Base. He was Honorably Discharged on November 23, 1953. On December 15, 1954 he once again enlisted into the Air Force and served with the 354th Fighter Wing Group. He attained the Rank of Staff Sargent on June 1, 1955 and was awarded the National Defense Medal. His last stint with the service began of March 6, 1957 when he enlisted into the Air Force once again and served with the 60 Fighter Squadron. On March 23, 1961 he recevied the AFLSA w/2 OLC and on June 12, 1961 he received the Good Conduct Medal with two Stars. He was Honorably Discharged on April 26, 1963. Winsor spent a total of 19 years and 28 days in the service.
