ROBERT C. PHILLIPS ~

Robert Columbus Phillips was born April 29, 1912, the oldest child of Philip and Nora Darnall Phillips.  He attended Mulberry Ridge Elementary School, graduated from Upshur County High School and attended Glenville State Teachers College and West Virginia Weslyan College.

He married Betty Hacker September 30, 1939. One son Robert Roscoe, was born December 13, 1941 and one daughter, Linda Lou was born December 5, 1955.  He has been a life long member of the French Creek Presbyterian Church, serving as elder.  He taught in the elementary schools of Upshur County and also served as principle from 1934 to 1944.

Mr. Phillips served as Scoutmaster of French Creek Troop No. 92 for seven years, and he was District Commissioner of Rural Scouting, Central W. Va. Council for six years.

He helped organize and was the first president of the Upshur Co. Truck Growers Association, helped organize and is a past Board Member of the Buckhannon Southern States Co-Operative.  He helped organize and has served as vice-president of both the Central W. Va. Artificial Breeders Co-Op (Upshur Co. Unit) and the Upshur Co. Dairy Herd Improvement Association.

Always active in both the Upshur County, and W. Va. Farm Bureau, Mr. Phillips served as president of the Upshur County Farm Bureau three terms, was a member of the Board of the W. Va. Farm Bureau seven years, served as a member of the Executive Board of the W. Va. Farm Bureau two terms and was the only voting delegate from West Virginia to the American Farm Bureau Federation Convention for two years.  He was also a member of the committee which located the W. Va. Farm Bureau Office in Upshur County.

In addition he was a member of President Eisenhower's Committee on Highway Safety.

From time to time, Mr. Phillips has done articles for West Virginia publications, the best known and most widely reprinted being a series called "Thinking Twice" in W. Va. Farm News.

He served as president of the Descendants of the French Creek Pioneers from 1962 until the resumption of the meetings in 1954.

He retired as 1962 and resides with his wife who owns and operates Hillpride Gift Shop and in partnership with their son, owns Hillpride Crafts which manufactures and distributes handcrafted jewelry.
