ORSON DECATOR PHILLIPS ~ 1844 - 1925
Son of Oliver Perry PHILLIPS and Elizabeth "Betsy" DUTTON
In 1862, 18 year old Orson Phillips joined Company G, 100th Infantry Illinois Volunteers of the Northern Army in the War Between the States. In July 1863, Phillips was with the Federal troops under General William S. Rosecrans in the Battle of Chattanooga, Tennessee. He was apparently with those who pursued the withdrawing troops of General Braxton Bragg across the Tennessee River into the mountains of northwestern Georgia as he took part in the battles of Chickamauga, Lookout Mountain, and Missionary Ridge where he was wounded and survived a gun shot wound to the head, thus preventing his continuing on with General Sherman in his March to the Sea.
