Notes for JOSHUA PHILLIPS:
In the History of Bristol Ontario New York there is listed a Hannah, Luther & Priscilla Phillips as members of the Baptist church in the History of the Baptist churchIn the 1790 census for Dighton Bristol County Massatusetts (LUTHER PHILLIPS FAMILY) there is listed 2 free males 16 years and over and 1 white female (no age given) ie. [Joshua, Luther & Hannah]
In the 1800 census for Bristol Ontario countyNew York ( Luther Phillips Family) there is listed 2 white females of 26and under 45.
THE ABOVE INFO is correct it LEADS TO THE CONCLUSION THAT THE HANNA PHILLIPS MENTIONED (probably) IN BOTH 1790 & 1800 CENSUSES MUST BE A SISTER (HANNAH)& NOT THE MOTHER (HANNAH [ FRANCIS] PHILLIPS) to our Luther Phillips, if indeed this is the right Joshua Phillips Family.
-----------------------------------------------------------THE LIFE & TIMES OF JOSHUA PHILLIPS
Poor Richard's Almanack, 1733 ( A Book of Interest for the Times)
Courteous Reader_,
I might in this place at tempt to gain thy Favour, by declaring that I write Almanacks with no other View than that of the publick Good; but in this I should not be sincere; and Men are now a-days too wise to be deceiv'd by Pretences how specious soever. The plain Truth of the Matter is, I am excessive poor, and my Wife, good Woman, is, I tell her, excessive proud; she cannot bear, she says, to sit spinning in her Shift of Tow, while I do nothing but gaze at the Stars; and has threatned more than once to burn all my Books and Rattling-Traps (as she calls my Instruments) if I do not make some profitable Use of them for the good of my Family. The Printer has offer'd me some considerable share of the Profits, and I have thus begun to comply with my Dame's desire.
Indeed this Motive would have had Force enough to have made me publish an Almanack many Years since, had it not been overpower'd by my Regard for my good Friend and Fellow-Student, Mr. _Titan Leeds_, whose Interest I was extreamly unwilling to hurt: But this Obstacle (I am far from speaking it with Pleasure) is soon to be removed, since inexorable Death, who was never known to respect Merit, has already prepared the mortal Dart, the fatal Sister has already extended her destroying Shears, and that ingenious Man must soon be taken from us. He dies, by my Calculation made at his Request, on _Oct._ 17. 1733. 3 ho. 29 m. _P.M._ at the very instant of the xxx of xxx and xxx: By his own Calculation he will survive till the 26th of the same Month. This small difference between us we have disputed whenever we have met these 9 Years past; but at length he is inclinable to agree with my Judgment; Which of us is most exact, a little Time will now determine. As therefore these Provinces may not longer expect to see any of his Performances after this Year, I think my self free to take up the Task, and request a share of the publick Encouragement; which I am the more apt to hope for on this Account, that the Buyer of my Almanack may consider himself, not only as purchasing an useful Utensil, but as performing an Act of Charity, to his poor _Friend and Servant__R. SAUNDERS._
______ Never spare the Parson's wine, nor the Baker's pudding. Visits should be short, like a winters day, Lest you're too troublesom hasten away. A house without woman & Fire-light, is like a body without soul or sprite. Kings & Bears often worry their keepers. Light purse, heavy heart. He's a Fool that makes his Doctor his Heir. Ne'er take a wife till thou hast a house (& a fire) to put her in. He's gone, and forgot nothing but to say _Farewel_ -- to his creditors. Love well, whip well. Let my respected friend _J. G._ Accept this humble verse of me. _viz._ Ingenious, learned, envy'd Youth, Go on as thou'st began; Even thy enemies take pride That thou'rt their countryman. Hunger never saw bad bread. Beware of meat twice boil'd, & an old foe reconcil'd. Great Talkers, little Doers. A rich rogue, is like a fat hog, who never does good til as dead as a log. Relation without friendship, friendship without power, power without will, will witho. effect, effect without profit, & profit without vertue, are not worth a farto. Eat to live, and not live to eat. March windy, and April rainy, makes _May_ the pleasantest month of any. The favour of the Great is no inheritance. Fools make feasts and wise men eat 'em. Beware of the young Doctor & the old Barber. He has chang'd his one ey'd horse for a blind one. The poor have little, beggars none, the rich too much, _enough_ not one. After 3 days men grow weary, of a wench, a guest, & weather rainy. To lengthen thy Life, lessen thy Meals. The proof of gold is fire, the proof of woman, gold; the proof of man, a woman. After feasts made, the maker scratches his head. Neither Shame nor Grace yet _Bob._ Many estates are spent in the getting, Since women for tea forsook spinning & knitting. He that lies down with Dogs, shall rise up with fleas. A fat kitchin, a lean Will. Distrust & caution are the parents of security. Tongue double, brings trouble. Take counsel in wine, but resolve afterwards in water. He that drinks fast, pays slow. Great famine when wolves eat wolves. A good Wife lost is God's gift lost. A taught horse, and a woman to teach, and teachers practising what they preach. He is ill cloth'd, who is bare of Virtue. The heart of a fool is in his mouth, but the mouth of a wise man is in his heart. Men & Melons are hard to know. He's the best physician that knows the worthlessness of the most medicines. Beware of meat twice boil'd, and an old Foe reconcil'd. A fine genius in his own country, is like gold in the mine. There is no little enemy. He has lost his Boots but sav'd his spurs. The old Man has given all to his Son: O fool! to undress thy self before thou art going to bed. Cheese and salt meat, should be sparingly eat. Doors and walls are fools paper. Anoint a villain and he'll stab you, stab him & he'l anoint you. Keep your mouth wet, feet dry. Where bread is wanting, all's to be sold. There is neither honour nor gain, got in dealing with a vil-lain. The fool hath made a vow, I guess, Never to let the Fire have peace. Snowy winter, a plentiful harvest. Nothing more like a Fool, than a drunken Man. God works wonders now & then; Behold! a Lawyer, an honest Man! He that lives carnally, won't live eternally. Innocence is its own Defence. Time _eateth_ all things, could old Poets say; The Times are chang'd, our times _drink_ all away. Never mind it, she'l be sober after the Holidays. .
Notes for ELIZABETH (TWIN ) PITTS:
KEY TO OUR PROOF IS THAT ELIZABETH (PITTS)PHILLIPS DIED AROUND THE SPRING OF1765 & THAT HER HUSBAND JOSHUA PHILLIPS son of JOSHUA PHILLIPS & HANNAH JONES (married 21 November 1715 in Dighton Bristol Masachusetts) IS THE ONE & THE SAME JOSHUA PHILLIPS WHO MARRIED BOTH ELIZABETH PITTS & LATER HANNAH FRANCIS (WE THINK IT MAY BE SO ).WE HAVE NO EVIDENCE SO FAR (FEBRUARY 15, 1999) THAT SAYS THIS IS NOT SO, BUT WE DO NOT HAVE ENOUGH EVIDENCE THAT SAYS IT IS SO FOR CERTAIN.Marriage Notes for JOSHUA PHILLIPS and ELIZABETH PITTS:
Marriage NOT listed in Dighton Bristol Massachusetts BMD. WHERE DID THEY GET MARRIED ?More About JOSHUA PHILLIPS and ELIZABETH PITTS:
Marriage: December 06, 1746, Dighton , Bristol, Massachusetts (Source: Ancestory World Tree.)Notes for HANNAH FRANCIS:
THE EVIDENCE SO FAR INDICATES THAT HANNAH FRANCIS WAS A "BAPTIST" NEITHER HER MARRIAGE TO JOSHUA NOR THE BIRTH OF HER CHILD(REN) IF ANY, WERE RECORDED IN THE DIGHTON BMD BOOKS. THERE IS A LISTING FOR HER MARRIAGE TO JOSHUA PHILLIPS ON THE FOURTH OF MAY 1765 IN THE IGI FOR DIGHTON BRISTOL MASSACHUSETTS. I HAVE YET TO FIND A BIRTH LISTING FOR LUTHER OR A SISTER IF ANY (HANNAH) . THERE IS A HANNAH PHILLIPS LISTED WITH PRISCELIA & LUTHER PHILLIPS IN THE 'HISTORY OF BRISTOL N.Y. FOR THE BAPTIST CHURCH & THERE ARE 2 ADULT WOMEN IN THE 1800 CENSUS FOR BRISTOL ONTARIO COUNTY NEW YORK BUT THEY ARE BOTH UNDER 45 THUS ELIMINATING HANNAH PHILLIPS (FRANCIS)...PERHAPS LUTHER HAD A SISTER NAMED HANNAH PHILLIPS.....
THERE IS NO LISTING FOR THE DEATH OF ELIZABETH PHILLIPS (PITTS) circa 1765 IN THE DIGHTON DEATH LIST . THERE IS A DEATH LISTING IN THE ANCESTRY WORLD TREE FOR ELIZABETH PITTS. THE EVIDENCE IS THAT JOSHUA DIED circa 1790 AT DIGHTON BUT IS NOT LISTED IN THE DIGHTON BOOK OF THE DEAD.
WE NEED MORE PROOF THAT LUTHER PHILLIPS WAS THE SON OF JOSHUA & HANNAH(FRANCIS) PHILLIPS IN ORDER TO PROVE THE LINE.--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Notes for ZEBULON PHILLIPS:
NOTES FOR ZEBULON PHILLIPS copied from FTM internet file & saved to .....Zebulon's birth is recorded Dighton, MA Town Records, B1, p. 151. Dighton Town Records, Book 1 (1714-1780), p. 183 records their marriage intentions, July 8, 1781- "Zebbulon Phillips & Silve Petengil both of Dighton". Same record, p. 186, cites their marriage on July 21, 1781 - "Zebbulon Phillips and Silva Penttengill both of Dighton".
Massachusetts Soldiers and Sailors of the Revolution documents seven years of Zebulon's service in the Revolution - age, height, description, etc...Sometime after the end of the Revolution he apparently moved with his family to Westminster, Windham Co., VT, where several children were born. He is listed in the 1790 census in VT, but apparently only one child, daughter Sylvia, had a birth recorded in the local vital records.
On jury list for Bristol, Ont. Co., NY 1817 (?son Zebulon?). Will? Surrogate Court Record 1838(?son Zebulon?), Bristol. Zebulon is buried at the Evergreen Cemetery, Baptist Hill, Bristol, NY, along with his wife. Their ages were marked on the tombstones, as well as notice of Zebulon's War service.NOTE: Children from notes copied from a Phillips genealogy by Florence J. Our SEARCH so far for the parents of PRISCILLA BOWEN.....right now I am on very THIN ICE but here it is: (UNABLE TO TRACE ZURVIAH BOWEN....ANYWHERE..)
1) There is NO PRISCILLA Bowen listed in the Dighton birth list (1700-1800) ! NOR is there a Priscilla Bowen found nearby !.....NEW INFO....from e-mail
Zurviah (Priscilla) Bowen is just about the most impotant person & the weakest link on my list of about 4000 people. Any INFO about her is appreciated ....The evidence I have so far is :
A) ...NEW INFO that I just looked up...Dighton Bristol county Massachusets VR B2 p45 Marriage MASON, Isaac from Thompson & BOWERS Suviah from Dighton 1797 , Feb 7.... Note the name BOWERS & the interesting spelling of Zurviah & BUT also that it has the same date as your list. )
2) The Dighton marriage list, lists the marriage of LUTHER PHILLIPS & PRISCILLA BOWEN for August 16 1795 & says that ... they are from Dighton Bristol Massachusetts (I can't find LUTHER'S birth...he may be a BAPTIST !)
3) The 1790 census for Dighton lists only one BOWEN FAMILY.. a JEREMIAH BOWEN , 2 males 16+, & 3 males 16-, & 4 females ....total 9 (THE Family fits) (IT SHOULD BE OUR FAMILY ...BUT...)
4)OUR FAMILIES:PHILLIPS*BOWEN*BRIGGS*FRANCIS .....are all listed within 5 families of each other in the 1790 Massachusetts Census for Dighton, Bristol... & all family names reappear in BRISTOL, ONTARIO COUNTY N.Y. (BUT PRISCELLA IS NOT LISTED) ...NOR is ZURVIAH.... APART FROM BIRTH LISTING

THEREFORE..........
I HAVE COME TO THE CONCLUSION THAT ....ZURVIAH BOWEN MUST BE PRISCILLA BOWEN...BUT HAVE YET TO PROVE IT....NEVERTHELESS .. FOR NOW I WILL PUT THIS FAMILY ON OUR TREE !

HARRIS, HENRY. One of the most beautiful homes in Howell Township, Livingston County, may be found upon section 20. It is situated upon a small farm of forty acres belonging to Mrs. Henry and is exceptionally fine in its situation and adornments. This gentleman is a native of Steuben County, N.Y., where he was born in 1830, and he is a son of John and Polly (Goodrich) HENRY, who were also natives of the Empire State. The parents of our subject came to Michigan in 1834 and became early settlers of this county, making their home in Brighton Township, whence they removed to Howell Township in 1848. Of their family of eleven children six are now living: Isaac, Harris, Jane, Maria, Marilla and Emily.
After fourteen years of life upon the farm, where his advantages were limited by the district school curriculum, Harris Henry began working for others, at which he continued until he went home and took charge of his father's farm, his parents were then in their declining years. It was agreed among the children, with the consent of the parents, that this son should take upon himself the care of his parents throughout their lifetime and when they died the home farm should be his. In the course of time he sold the old place, and purchased another in Genesee County, where he found opportunities for brick-making, in which he engaged and worked in this line of business for some six years, both there and in this county. Since that time he has been engaged in farming and most of the time has been in Howell Township.
The marriage of this enterprising and progressive farmer with a lady of culture and refinement, Adelia Phillips by name, took place in 1859. She was a daughter of Gayland and Margaret Phillips, and after her union with Mr. Henry became the mother of five children, three of whom are now living, namely: Jennie, Eugene and Plinn G. Jennie married Mr. Brundage and has three children: Lena, Etna and an infant unnamed; Eugene was united in marriage with Miss Rose Hook.
Mrs. Adelia Henry died in 1882, and by his second marriage Mr. Henry brought to his home Mrs. Alzina Fitch, the daughter of Hiram and Rachel (Kenyon) Stephens. Mr. Stephens came from New York to Michigan in 1850, and settled on section 20, of Howell Township, where he continued his former avocation of farming. He had a fine property of one hundred and eighty acres which he put in a first-class condition and he and his good wife lived there until his death. They were both connected with the Methodist Church and were useful in this relation. Of their nine children six are now living, named as follows: Madison, Mrs. Henry, John, Abbie and Lucinda; the following are deceased--Julia, Henry, Samuel and Preston.
Mrs. Henry[Alzina Stevens) was born in Jefferson County, N.Y., and there received her education. When quite young she was married to Franklin H. Stewart, a native of New York who came West in 1850 and made his home upon forty acres of land on section 20, Howell Township. After living here for two years they sold their property and returned East.
But three years later they returned to Michigan and settled on section 20, upon forty acres of land where Mrs. Henry now lives. After Mr. Stewart's death, which took place in 1867, his widow was united in marriage with Alpheus Fitch, a New Yorker. He died in 1882 after which she became the wife of Mr. Henry ; she is an active and earnest member of the Methodist Protestant Church and is useful in its communion. Mr. Henry is an earnest believer in the doctrines of the Democratic party, and although he does not seek official positions he is intelligently interested in the movements of his party and ever ready to cast his vote for its Prosperity.Marriage Notes for ADELIA PHILLIPS and HARRIS HENRY:

-----------------------------------------------David, I had a chance to go to Lansing yesterday and did find the obituary for Philo Phillips. It was a nice clear one on page two of the Lansing Journal (now-a-days the Lansing State Journal) for 21 February 1896. It was a weekly paper. I made a photo copy for you.
Also, the reader/printer was down at the public library here in Howell on Monday last so I wasn't able to finish the newspaper search. I did make notes of where appropriate columns were and will go again Monday morning to print them out. (Supposedly the machine has been repaired. I called yesterday.) I discovered two rolls of film of a paper called the Livingston Democrat and there were columns mentioning Fleming, so I will send those also.
At any rate, I'll try to get all of this stuff in the mail to you no later than Weds, August 9th. Look for the packet sometime Friday or Saturday following. Yours, Karen T

Philo S. Phillips died at 7 o'clock this morning at his home , 413 River street, under circumstances which point strongly to suicide. At 5:30 o'clock Dr Ball recieved a summons to come to the house. When he arrived he found Phillips completely unconscious and in a dying condition. Stimulants and restoratives were applied , but without effect. At the first glance it was apparent that the man was suffering from the effects of some opiate. His pulse was beating, but his respiratory organs seemed greatly disturbed, an evidence of opiate poising. The man was rapidly passing away when Dr. R. J. Shanks arrived, and after examining the patient he agreed that Phillips was suffering from the effects of Morphine or some other opiate. Dr. Watson was also summond but nothing could be done to revive the dying man.
About a month ago Phillips traded his homestead for a meat market on Michigan avenue next to the bridge and the venture did not prove profitable. Day by day he saw his investment slipping away from him and no returns coming in. During the past week he was frequently found in a despondent mood.
Last evening after coming home from his market he refused to eat any supper but spent several hours figuring over accounts and books . He also spent a half hour looking after one of his children who was ill. Finally near midnight he put away his books and retired . At 5 o'clock Mrs. Phillips found him unconscious.
Mrs. Phillips is loath to believe that her husband committed suicide as he had always been a cheerful disposition until this last financial trouble and had always been devoted to his family . The house has been thoroughly searched for evidence of some drug but without any result. Phillips went to a drug store last evening and purchased some cough lozenges for one of his children , but wheather he purchased any drug at the time THE JOURNAL was unable to ascertain. Coroner Butts was at first inclined to hold an inquest but later decide that the circumstance did not warrent the proceeding.
Mr. Phillips was born in Howell , October 19, 1855, and has been a resident of Lansing the past 11 years. He had always proved himself an honest , industrious and exemplary citizen and won many friends who will be greatly shocked by his death. He is survived by a wife , two sons, and two daughters. His mother and two brothers reside in Howell.

News reached this place by telephone that Philo Phillips was dead at Lansing. He is the son of Mrs Abbe Tabor. No particulars of his death was known until after Mrs. Tabor and her twin sons Alonzo and Alphonzo Phillips took the afternoon train on Saturday for Lansing. Robert Wakefield [father of Ellen Phillips] accompanied them. An item in the evening news says he commited suicide.

_____________________________________________________________________TOWN OF ARBELA
In the southwest corner of the county, with the county lines as its western and southern boundaries, with Millington on the east and Tuscola on the north, lies the
town of Arbela. It has a generally level surface, originally well wooded with maple, elm, beech, basswood, with bodies of pine of excellent quality. The largest body of pine was in the southwestern part of the town. The soil is generally a sandy loam, with clay loam in portions of the town. The actual and active settlement of the town dates in 1850, though Milton Whitney had at that time been several years a resident, his entry of land in section five, dating December 10, 1845. In November 1849, Simeon Newton and William Allen came from Livingston County, on foot, to explore the northern wilds in search of a location. Having made a selection they returned here again the following January, Mr. Allen making an entry on the way, of northeast quarter of northeast quarter of section 17. On this tract they worked for two seasons, making shingles. These were sent out by the team which brought them in supplies, and by teams passing in and out. In this enterprise their success was indifferent, the end of the first year finding them nine dollars in debt, to say nothing of the next to starvation they had endured, and the second, but forty dollars ahead; upon which they gave it up and turned their attentionto farming. Mr. Newton, in March 1850, built a loghouse in section 16, on the site opposite where he now resides. To this he brought his family, consisting of his wife, two boys and a girl, during the same month. They began keeping a hotel, and the rapidly increasing travel, both of lumbermen, and settlers, gave them frequently an over full house. They brought in, with three cows, several head of young cattle, one and a half bushels of ears of corn, a barrel of buckwheat flour, and fifty cents with which to run a shingle camp, farm, and hotel. Mr. Newton says the hotel could not but pay, as by the time a traveler reached it he was so exhausted, by reason of the length and character of the road, that he could get no farther. He must have viewed the promised land of rest long before he reached it, for with two miles there weretwenty-seven bends in the road, which wound hither and thither to escape the low places. And at the best the State road, which was cut through in 1849, was but a place for a road. Mr. Newton being well acquainted with the county, and informed as to what desirable lands were subject to entry, was frequently called on to guide new comers to suitable locations, and as he did not fail to point out the desirableness ofhis own neighborhood, he undoubtedly aided largely in forwarding the settlement of thetown. He also brought in flour and other groceries to supply the neighboring country.
Shortly after Newton and Allen, came Alanson Calkins, James Brophy, and others. Indeed, after the first settlers others came in rapidly.
For several years the mail was obtained from Tuscola; but in 1858 or 1859 a mail route was opened and a post office established in the southwest part of the town.
The first schoolhouse was built by Mr. Newton in 1853 or 1854, in section 9, and the first school was taught in it by Mr. Hodges, who boarded at Newton's.
Among the first buildings in the town was a road shanty, belonging to Mr. Wilson, who had the contract of cutting out the state road, and which was occupied at first by Allen and Newton before their own shanty was ready for occupancy.
Religion, with rites and services, is ever the attendant of advancing civilization, and in Arbela, as early as 1855, preachers of the Methodist Episcopal Church found
their way here. Elders Klump and Andrews being among the pioneers, preaching in school-houses and in the narrow cabins of the settlers. In 1851 a saw-mill was built by Hinckley & McLean, on section 32. Another mill followed, and in a short time the present village of Pine Grove grew to considerable
prominence. A large amount of trade was done, hotel business was lively, and the roadswere lined with teams, hauling the product of the mills to Saginaw and elsewhere. On the opening of the mail route a postoffice was established, and Samuel Evans appointed postmaster, who, however, did not serve. Nathan Hinckley, of Pine Run, being appointed, put a deputy, Truman Curtis, in charge. The next postmaster was Roger R. Rathburn, who was succeeded by Clark Powell, and he by John Jacobs, the present incumbent.About 1872 a post office was established nearer the center of the town, with H. H. Crosby as postmaster. He was succeeded by R. L. Merrick, and he by William Allen. The present postmaster is James Spears. The office is called Elva.

MILLENIUMA moment in time, my life of 21,802 days, a century, or a thousand years. IT WAS THE TIME. It was December 31 in the year of our lord 2000 Anno Domini
,give or take a few years. Vivien had been after me early in the fall to get the logs for the long PROMISED bonfire ,to celebrate the New Millennium. I hate gathering wood. We have had a brown fall , perfect weather & therefore no reason not to have a fire. I had put it off for the past year or so , but managed to get it done nearly 24 hours before I had to. Even Gordon had been Volunteered by Jane to help me build the pile. The pile had shrunk from a great pile of twenty truck loads of wood to an interesting pile of carefully layered wood dragged in behind the Eagle Vista & piled in a design to magnify its’ small size. It turned out to be just the perfect size. The pile of wood took many weeks even months of thought & and only a few minutes to build. The kids were away, Alan at work in Northern Alberta, Bruce at a party in Elona B. C. , Camille at a house party at Bear’s Paw west of Calgary. We had five : the Watsons, Carol , & Ourselves, & no sheep & no cows, one cat Jeep, & one dog Dusty.....all to party with. Jeep & Dusty sensibly went to sleep. After some brain storming we sorted out the order of things , we planed to do. No one else HAD made any plans; like , I HAD PLANNED FOR THE WOOD PILE.
I watched & taped THE DAY on the VCR as time moved from New Zealand around the world to Caroline & beyond. Near Midnight Gordon set off the fire works, the Bonfire burned bright, whilethe girls danced around with their sparklers & their glow lights. Nothing caught on fire that wasn’t supposed to. We returned to the house for the Pot Luck dinner, enough beans to feed an army, some ham, & some rice , & two kinds of salad. We also drank from the black bottle, Cordon Negro, to the beginning, to the middle & to the end ,in new heavy ended glasses.....A perfect Day ......Argyle David McFarlane
