•H. H. Hardesty's “Biographical Atlas of WV,” vol. 2, p. 138, under Personal History Department of Upshur County; Washington District: JONATHAN GOULD -- born in Upshur county, September 8, 1826, and Jemima E. Crites, born in this county September 20, 1843, were here united in marriage on the 22d of February 1865. Five children were born of their union, the oldest daughter lives in the county, the oldest son is deceased, and the other children are at home. These children were born: Idella May, February 2, 1866; Calvin D., July 6, 1867; Cordie Aileen, May 22, 1869; Irvin Hyre, April 23, 1871; Kenneth E. February 25, 1873. Calvin D. died July 6, 1867. Jonathan Gould is a son of Nathan and Samantha (Phillips) Gould, and his wife's parents are Jacob and Lucina (Gillette) Crites. They have always made their home in Upshur county. In 1861 Jonathan Gould volunteered for service in the Federal army, and was three years a member of Company B, 10th West Virginia Infantry. He was a participant in the battles of Kernstown and Beverly, and numerous skirmishes. He is a skilled workman at the trade of carpenter, and is the owner of two good farms; one of 78 acres on Middle Fork river, and another of 45 acres on the waters of Indian Camp and Grand Camp. Queens, Upshur County, West Virginia, is his post office address.
•Wes Cochran’s abstract of the Upshur County, WV, 1860 Census, p. 60, shows Jonathan Gould, age 22, a Journeyman Carpenter, living in the Martin Burr household.
•His military record shows that he enlisted September 8, 1861. He was wounded in the hip July 24, 1863, and was in Libby, the Confederate prison, for two months. He was discharged from B Company, 10th Regiment, WV Infantry, January 3, 1865, with the rank of corporal.
