Van Leuvenigh House, New Castle Delaware
ARMITAGE HOUSE The Armitage Inn gets its name from the Armitage family whose daughter Ann married Zachariah Van Leuvenigh and lived in this house with her family. In 1789, her husband bequeathed to her this house "fronting the River Delaware" where she lived until her death in 1824 at the age of 87.
HISTORY OF ARMITAGE HOUSE
“Gentlemen, you might be interested in knowing occupants of
this room have watched ships sailing up and down the Delaware
for nearly 300 years. Although the Inn was built in 1732, one
of the rooms on the main floor was actually built in the 1600’s.
They say William Penn first set foot in the New World just a few
feet from the Inn’s front door.
“Perhaps most pertinent to our purpose today,” added Winderside,
“is the role the house played during the American Revolutionary
War. Zachariah Van Leuvenigh bought the property in
1765. He was a patriot during the War. Post riders, carrying information
about the progress of the War, would stop to give Van
Leuvenigh the latest news. He gave them comfort and sped them
on their way.

Sad Accident at Lumberton Quarries
On Tuesday afternoon while Al Vanluvanee was standing on a ledge about 50 feet above the quarry a large stone came crushing down upon him, knocking him down so that he hung over the ledge head downward. He was soon helped out of her perilous position. Dr. Walter was sent for, and it was found on examination that one leg was broken below the knee, the other leg and hip broken and smashed in a frightful manner. One arm and some of his ribs were also broken. His head was cut but not dangerously. The doctor thought the best thing would be to send him immediately to a hospital and three of his friends took him to the Catholic Hospital at Trenton on the evening train. He was conscious all the time.
Word was received by telegram Wednesday morning that he was very weak and nothing could be done for him. Another telegram soon followed saying that he was dead.
He will be buried from his brother-in-law's residence, William Killmer. Al was a sober and industrious young man and had saved up quite a snug little sum of money.
This is the first serious accident that has happened since the quarry has been running, although they have been employing a large number of hands, and being dangerous work nothing more serious than often mashed fingers or toes has been the result.
