  • Drumthwacket Estate
The Drumthwacket estate in Princeton is maintained by the Division of Parks and Forestry under the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection. As it is the official residence of the governor.
Drumthwacket has a long connection with New Jersey's history. The land was purchased in 1696 by William Olden. The Oldens were one of six Quaker families who were among the earliest settlers of Prince-Town. The original Olden homestead still stands on the property.

The first governor to live in the stately central portion was Charles Smith Olden. He built it in 1835 and became New Jersey's 28th chief executive in 1860. Old3n was inspired by the architecture of New Orleans, where he had been in business for nine years before returning to New Jersey in 1834. He brought back fond memories of the impressively columned mansions being build in the Louisiana plantation country.

Governor Olden died at home in 1876 at the age of 77.
