| The West Swamp Mennonite Church traces its beginning to the year 1717, when a Mennonite |
| elder, Valentine Clemmer, came to the Great Swamp region accompanied by a goodly |
| number of Mennonite immigrant families. Organized worship was conducted in homes. The |
| first meeting house was erected in 1735, built of logs. In 1790 this was dismantled and |
