Parents:Mother: CatherineFamily History: History of Essex County:Robert came from England as one of seventeen men with Rev. Nathaniel Rogers...On November 17, 1636, two ships arrived from London, names unknown, 'full of passengers.' One of them had been twenty-six weeks from the Thames, and eighteen weeks from land to land. 'Their beer all spent and leaked out a month before their arrival, so as they were forced to stinking water (and that very little) mixed with sack or vinegar, and their other provisions very short and bad. Yet, through the great provdience of the Lord, they came safe on shore, and most of them sound and well liking. One of the ships was overset in the night by a sudden gust, and lay so for half an hour, yet righted herself.'Robert was a cordwainer and Mary was a tailor. On March 3, 1636 Robert was admitted freeman at Boston, MA, which obviously invalidates arrival with the above group. From September 1636 to August 21, 1683 he served as Town Clerk and Register of Deeds. On February 19, 1637 a houselot on High Street was granted to Robert. On March 12, 1637 he was appointed Deputy to the General Court and given the task to raise fifteen hundred pounds for the Colony. In 1638 he served as a member of committee to fix county, town and farm lines. In March 1645 the town voted that Robert Lord "keep the streets clear of wood and timber under penalty 12d the load and as proportionable for more or less for lying or standing above three days in any of the streets or lanes." In 1645 served on the committee empowered to grant house lots to settlers. From 1648 through March 27, 1660, when he was superseded by his son Robert, he served either as marshal or sheriff of Ipswich court. In 1648 he was one of Denison's subscribers and served as clerk of court at Ipswich. In 1648, in general Town meeting, it was ordered that all the inhabitants of the Town that shall be absent from the yearly meeting, or any other part whereof they have lawful warning, shall forfeit a shilling. Robert Lord earned his two- thirds no doubt, for his duties included ringing the bell, calling the roll, and collecting the forfeit. Twelve Freemen were soon called upon to pay a fine of 12d apiece for absence." On March 27, 1649 he was appointed recorder and sealer of weights and measures at Ipswich. Alexander Knight of Ipswich was presented at Court 10, 8 mo. 1650, for lying, the wit. were Mark Symonds, goodwife Perry, Robert Lord, goodman How and Richard Cooke. On March 30, 1652 he was empowered by the magistrates to "issue all executions in civil and criminal cases". On August 22, 1654 he was appointed searcher of coin. In 1658 he served as clerk of court in Salem. In his account book, under date of 1660, he mentions his "sister ffitt." In a deposition given July 30, 1660, he stated that he was 57 years old. In 1661 served as a selectman, and for many years after. In 1666 Robert Lord built a grist mill. In 1664 he was listed as a shareholder in Plum Island. In 1679 he was a voter in town affairs. His will was dated June 28, proved September 25, 1683, and bequeathed all his estate to his wife, Mary, who "By God's good providence we have lived comfortably together in a married condition almost fifty-three years." and gave legacies to his eldest son, Robert; to his daughter Sarah Wilson; to his sons Nathaniel; Thomas and Samuel, who removed to Charlestown; to the children of his daughter Chandler, deceased, viz: Mary, William, Joseph and Samuel; to his daughters Abigail Foster and Hannah Grow provided that they pay a certain sum to their sister Susanna Osgood and to his grandsons Samuel Lord, now living with me, and Robert Lord "tersha". His estate was inventoried at £645.Children:
