In 1880 Nicholas was living in his sister Maggie’s household 146 at Michigan City, IN.
According to Susan Ingerman (December 3, 2001), following trip to Michigan City, IN and New Buffalo, MI: “Before I go I want to tell you about this. Maybe you know who she is? I found a very large soft marble statue. (about 6 ft. tall) (Dusk was starting as I found it.) It said:
Here rests in Peace
Mary
Wife of N. Marx
Born June 28, 1862
Died Dec. 14, 1887
a
Age 25 ys.
5 months & 16 days
on the side reads:
Son of ? Marx
?Mary? Marx
Cant read rest it's dusk and stone eroded. (I thought perhaps she died in child birth but not sure.) next to this large statue (Very close) is a small soft marble white stone says Father I cant read it. Eroding and too dark have to leave the cemetery. On the top of the large statue is an urn. It is in need of repair. Has broken off and just balancing on top. I imagine she is a relative somehow. her marker is in close proximity to the Mathias Marx and Wiedenman markers. I've got to go. Just wanted to let you know about some of what I found yesterday.”

In 1900 Nicholas, born Aug 1857 in Germany, 42 year old brick mason, married 8 years, immigrated 1866 and owns his own home free and clear; Anna, born May 1868 in NY, 32 year old, married 8 years, having given birth to 1 child, 0 of whom are still living; were living at 1122 Pine St, Michigan City, IN {around the corner from his sister Catherine Seimetz}. Both could read, write and speak English and he had not been unemployed during the previous 12 months.
