Edward enlisted on March 22, 1864 in Co. A of 2nd Michigan Infantry, Hilldale County, Michigan and was mustered out June 2, 1865. According to Joseph Paul Bohner (December 28, 2001): "Edward died of heart disease during the blizzard of 1918, and his body was held in the funeral home until they could get to the cemetery. He was then taken out and buried in the snow, until it melted and they could dig his grave on January 26, 1918. During his service in the Civil War, on July 30, 1864, he was shot in the right shoulder, and in his left leg, and was treated at Mt. Pleasant Hospital in Washington,D.C., where he was discharged from the army on June 2, 1864, because of his wound. In one of the engagements of the wilderness, he was made a prisoner, but in an unguarded moment he overcame his enemy, and made his escape. He had grey eyes, and a fair complexion. He was disabled in 1912, because of war wound and admitted to the Soldiers and Sailors Home on October 17, 1916 with paraplegia. According to Edwina Bankson, granddaughter of Edward and Elizabeth, Elizabeth was Catholic, and because she married outside the church, she was disowned by her family. She says her mother went to Ft. Wayne, Indiana one time to visit Elizabeth's family, and the door was shut in their face. Most of Edward's children were born in AmboyTownship, Hillsdale County Michigan, which is located on the North side of Williams County, Ohio. They lived either in Detroit, Michigan or Montpelier, Ohio all their lives. The railroad connected Montpelier and Detroit, and some moved back and forth. Edward received an army pension, and I obtained his war record. His uncle and cousins lived in the West Unity area, and that is probably how he met Elizabeth."

Out of our garden a blossom is lost our dear mother has been touched by the frost so in the dust is her fair silvered kap head swelling the ranks of a beautiful dead for a face that has taught us to say the flowers in the dear fathers garden today. She is bloming in beauty amongst earth loved and lost never again to be touched by the frost. The husband and children take this method of expressing their apreciation to those who kindly assisted in the care and comfort of wife and mother during this sickness and burial.
