From Ray Buckingham's Notes
Levi and Laura's oldest son, Milton L. Buckingham (1840-1928) is our continuing link. Milton married Armina Ann Thurston (1842-1930) on September 21, 1860.  Soon afterwards the young couple moved from Darke County to Union City.  He soon became an expert plasterer and was associated with his cousins, George and Jefferson M. Buckingham as well as with my father, Harry B. Buckingham, in building and finishing many houses and other structures in and around Union City. Milton was well known in Odd Follow Lodge circles.  It is said that he assisted in digging the first grave in Union City Cemetery.  Oddly enough, Milton and Armina, were among the very first to be buried in the new addition to that original cemetery.  They had 2 children, a daughter, Florence T. who born on August 21, 1861 and a son, Newton W. who was born in June, 1864.

From Ray Buckingham's Notes
George W. Buckingham (1840-1904) the older brother of my grandfather, Jefferson Monroe Buckingham was born in Harrison Township, Darke County, Ohio.  He followed the plasterers trade in Union City and lived next door to my grandparents on land that was once part of their father, Benjamin Buckingham's farm.  It was a large and spacious home site, featuring tall trees.  George's first wife was Sarah C. Wolfe (1848-1879), she passing away while quite young.  However, they did have three children: Clara, born in 1870, who married Allen Griffith, a Chicago dentist and they had no children; Esmittie, or Eva, was born in 1872 and she married Dubois Young who later became president of the Hupp Automobile Company.  They had a son, Richard, last known to be living in La Jolla, California and their third child, William E. was born in 1874 and died in 1883 at the age of only 9 years.
George's second wife was Marrietta (Mary Etta) Lambert (1857-1937).  They had six children, most of whom we remember.  Edgar E. (1882-1929) worked at the Hub Finance Corporation in Union City and he was never married.  Alonzo L. (1884-1971) married Frances Starbuck and they had one daughter, Joan,, who was married to Roland Davis (deceased) and they had a son, Charles. Alonzo was a sales representative of a major manufacturer of kitchen cabinets and lived in Arcanum, Ohio.  Henrietta (Retta) was born in 1885.  She married Vern Robinson, telephone company manager of Winchester, Indiana.  They had two children:  Richard, who never married and Miriam, who married James Hollingsworth and they had two children, namely Dr. Tom Hollingsworth of Muncie and Marietta,, who married Morris Klapper and they had three children.  Retta passed away in 1971.
Ernest E. (1889-1913) never married.  Alma, who was born in 1891 married Charles Ebling. After his death she married Carl Freese, also now deceased.  She lives in Richmond, Indiana.  Flora Mae, born in 1896, married James Wigmore and they had three children:  Alma Louise, born in 1918, married Norman Joy and lives in Indianapolis.  They have a son., Norman, who lives in Ft. Wayne and he has a daughter, Alletah and a son, Christian James.  Harriette (1919-1947) had a son, Stephen Stewart.  Flora's only son, Cecil,, born in 1920, lives in Illinois and has a son and four daughters. Flora's second husband, Perry Hughes, is deceased.  She, like her sister, Alma, lives in Richmond, Indiana.
While living in Union City, the three girls, Retta, Alma and Flora, all worked at the telephone company office.  My first year of marriage, 1929, Edgar hired me to mow their huge yard each Saturday.  With the $1.25 he paid me we would take in the Sunday matinee and stop at Charlie Heitzman's confectionery afterwards for a soda or sundae.  I also recall Retta's husband, Vern Robinson, making up his Rotary Club attendance quite often at our Union City Club.  Their son, as I recall, was quite a basketball player at Winchester High School.  The Buckingham girls always took particular delight in telling how they took care of me as a baby.
This particular line of male Buckinghams no longer exists.

Ray Buckingham's Notes
In order to set the scene we must go back to Richard Mason who was born in North Carolina about 1795.  In 1805, as a boy, he came to Clinton County, Ohio where eventually he married Sarah Jackson and then moved on to Wayne County, Indiana thence in 1834 to Kosciusco County, Indiana.  A son, Thomas J. Mason followed his parents as they made their moves.  He had married Jane Polly, a native of Preble County, Ohio in 1830.  Eventually the young couple and family left northern Indiana and settled on a farm in Wayne Township, Randolph County, Indiana near South Salem.  At various times Thomas served as township assessor and also Justice of the Peace.  Thomas and Jane had ten children with three of them, all brothers, providing the connection between the Buckinghams and the Masons.  Milton married Angeline Conklin and they were the parents of Sarah Jane Mason Buckingham, my grandmother.  William R. and Elihu, brothers of Milton, married Amanda M. Buckingham and Sarah E. Buckingham, respectively, both of whom were sisters of my grandfather., Jefferson Monroe Buckingham, and daughters of Benjamin Franklin Buckingham my great grandfather. It was kind of a triple connection.
As sort of a personal touch, I recall as a school boy the Hotel Mason, a long, narrow, rickety frame structure adjacent to the sidewalk at the northeast corner of Oak and Howard Streets.  I also recall when it was torn down to make way for a Standard Oil Service Station that is now a laundry.  I remember also the deteriorating old brick house fronting on West Oak Street that was once the farm home of Thomas Mason and family prior to that part of their farm becoming Mason’s Addition to Union City.  Floyd Garver erected a beautiful home on that spot that in later years is surrounded by ugly encroachment perpetrated by the Body Company. In 1937 we purchased the house at 1011 West Oak Street, a part of that Mason’s Addition and lived there until moving to Ohio in 1954.  A further note:  my father, Harry E. Buckingham, and his contractor boss, Billy Stauffer,, built this very house some 25 years before.

They had the following children:

  106 F i Martha J. Mason was born 1867.

1870 Census, Winchester Post Office, Wayne Twp., Randolph Co., Indiana, page 478b (have copy) - Amanda Mason, age 3, born in Indiana.
1880 Census Wayne Twp., Randolph Co., Indiana, page 172a (have copy) - Martha J. Mason, age 13, single, goes to school, born in Indiana.

46. Jefferson Monroe Buckingham 1 (Benjamin Franklin , Mashel ) was born 2 9 Jul 1850 in Near Bethel, Wayne County, Indiana. He died 3 3 Dec 1942 in Union City, Indiana and was buried 4 5 Dec 1942 in Union City Cemetery, Randolph County, Indiana.

Roe Buckingham passes away in Union City home.
Jefferson M. (Roe) Buckingham, 92, retired carpenter, died at 11:30 a. m. yesterday at his home, 1240 West Oak street, in the house he built in 1883.
A native of Wayne county, where he was born near Bethel on July 9, 1850, the son of Benjamine and Martha (Hiatt) Buckingham, the deceased could remember Union City when there was only one house west of High on Oak street. During his lifetime he assisted in building many homes and business houses in Union City.
Shortly after his birth, his parents moved to Darke county, Ohio, living there until he was nine years old when the family moved to Union City to a farm which extended past the Big Four railroad and included the Brookside addition in which the family home was located.
Mr. Buckingham attended old No. 1 school north of Union City. He was married in April 1880 to Sarah Jane Mason, who died in July 1941.
Surviving are four children, Harry E. and Clayton E., of Union City, Grover C. of Bellefontaine, Ohio, and Miss Bessie Buckingham, at home; and one sister, Mrs. Elihu Mason of west of Haysville.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 2 p. m. at the Fraze funeral home in Union City in charge of Rev. Earl Lantz. Burial will be in the Union City cemetery. The body will remain at the mortuary, where friends may call.

Ray Buckingham's Notes
Grandfather Roe Buckingham, son of Benjamin Franklin and Martha Hiatt Buckingham, according to family records, was born on a farm near Bethel in Wayne County,, Indiana on July 9th, 1850.  While grandfather was still a young lad the family moved across the state line into Ohio where they lived for a brief time before moving back to Indiana.  Their new location was near Union City but in Wayne Township.  The farm was of considerable acreage, a part of which was to later become Brookside addition to Union City. Grandpa got his meager education at Goosehaven School in yearly terms of two or three months.  The school was located on Jackson Pike, about a half mile north of their farm home which was located on the same road.
Grandpa married Sarah Jane Mason., daughter of Milton and Angeline Conklin Mason, in 1880, she being 19 and he was 30 at that time.  Grandma was born April 25, 1861 in a house that stood where the Union City post office now is located.  At age 5 her parents took up homesteading in far away Jackson County, Minnesota.  It was there in a little red schoolhouse that she got her education. She often related to me how she and her little friends were playing in the street at Northfield when the James gang rode in and robbed the bank.  Minnesota winters were so severe and her father's health was not good so they returned to Indiana where they lived on a farm near Bartonia, Wayne Township, Indiana.  It was soon after their return that she and grandpa were married.
After marriage grandpa worked briefly at Union City Cemetery.  By 1883 the young couple was able to move into a house they had built themselves on a large Oak Street lot that was originally a part of great grandfather's farm.  By this time grandpa was adept at the carpenter's trade.  It was in this house that they lived out their entire lives.  Impaired health kept grandma homebound for her last 20 years of life.  There were 5 children including 3 sons: Grover, Harry (my father) and Clayton.  The 2 daughters were Minnie, who was an accident victim while still an infant and Bessie, who never married. She lived with them until their deaths.  Grover was a specialty upholsterer who married Maggie Resor and they had one son, Lawrence, all of whom have long since been deceased.  Clayton E. was born in 1899 and he married Ruby Ethel Flory of Darke County, Ohio.  He worked at the Union City Body Company while at the same time he developed a nursery and landscape business of successful proportions.  Bessie was everybody's favorite aunt.  As a young girl she went to work setting ads for the Union City Times.  When it was sold, after a rest, she went to Troy and did the same type of work for the Daily News.  She retired at age 72 and moved into an apartment in Union City.  Only recently,, because of bad health and an accident, she moved into a rest home where she does remarkably well for a 94-year old person.
Note: Contrary to family records the Indiana census for 1850 states that great grandfather Benjamin Franklin Buckingham was living in Greensfork Township, Randolph County at the time of grandpa's birth.  An interesting aside is the fact that both the Indiana and Ohio census reports list Benjamin as resident in 1860

                         OBITUARY
Jefferson Monroe Buckingham (1850-1942) my grandfather
To the most of us here today, a century is a long time, as indeed it is.  We are reminded of this fact because of the passing of a friend and neighbor, and a long time citizen of our city, whose life is revealed in brief in the following statements.  More than 92 years ago, in the adjoining county of Wayne, Indiana,, near the village of Bethel, there lived Benjamin and Martha Hiatt Buckingham. Among the sons and daughters born to this pioneer couple was one son to whom they gave the name, Jefferson Monroe Buckingham, July 9, 1850.
While still quite young, his parents moved their family to German Township, now Liberty Township, Darke County, Ohio.  When this lad was about 9 years old, the family came to occupy a farm that is now much included in the corporate limits of Union City,, along the western side of the city, known in part as the Brookside Addition.
He attended the old Number 1 School situated north of this farm somewhere near the location of the present new Disposal Plant, then called Goose Haven School.
He was married to Sarah Jane Mason in April of 1880.  He followed the work of a carpenter all of his active years.  He had much to do with the building and development of the city as we know it today.  He was able to tell many interesting facts about its growth,, as he first knew it as a mere village, when there was but one house west of High St. on what we know as Oak Street.
He built his home at 1240 West Oak Street in 1883, the year of the destructive fire that swept a portion of our city that was along Pearl Street next to the railroads.  So, for 83 years he lived on the land that was once his father's farm.
Mr. Buckingham was the father of three sons and one daughter.  They are as follows:  Bessie M. at home.  Harry E. and Clayton E. of Union City and Grover C. of Bellefontaine, Ohio.  The wife and mother died July 31, 1941.
Besides the children mentioned there are six grandchildren and five great grandchildren, and one sister, Mrs. Elihu Mason of Union City, one mile west of Haysville.
He passed away at 11:30 A.M. on December 3, 1942, aged 92 years, 4 months and 24 days.

Jefferson married 1 Sarah Jane Mason 1 on 24 Mar 1881 in Randolph County. Sarah was born 2 25 Apr 1861 in Union City, Indiana. She died 3 31 Jul 1941 in Union City, Indiana and was buried 4 2 Aug 1941 in Union City Cemetery.

Ray Buckingham's Notes
OBITUARY                                   Sarah Jane Mason Buckingham (1861-1941) my grandmother
Eighty years ago Union City was a small village situated in the midst of much unbroken forest land. It had its beginning a few years before.
Had you been in the village Apr. 25, 1861, you would have found the inhabitants rejoicing with their neighbor over the birth of a daughter.  These people were Milton and Angeline Conklin Mason, and they gave their little daughter the name, Sarah Jane.  There home stood on the village lot that is now the location of the present post office.  The old house that was their home was torn away when the post-office was erected.
When she was 5 years old her parents went to Jackson County, Minnesota to live.  That country was very new and sparsely inhabited at that date.  She attended school in the little prairie schoolhouse and it was here she grew to young womanhood and taught school for awhile.
She returned to Union City with her parents a little later, and here married Jefferson Monroe Buckingham in 1880.  This young couple moved to the present home site in 1883, and built with their own hands the present house which has been their home through all the succeeding years.  Here their family of three sons and one daughter was reared to adult age except for one daughter, Minnie B., who died at the age of 1  years.
Surviving her are the husband, three sons,, Harry E. and Clayton E. of Union City and Grover C. of Bellefontaine, Ohio.  One daughter, Bessie, at home.  There are six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.  She was the last of her father's family.
She was a member of the Christian Church for many years, having been baptized within the pastorate of M. W. Harkins.  For 20 years or more she has not been away from her home but little,, because of impaired health.
She passed away from the scenes of earth July 31, 1941, having passed her 80th year.
It was kind of a triple connection
.
I remember also the deteriorating old brick house fronting on West Oak Street that was once the farm home of Thomas Mason and family prior to that part of their farm becoming Mason's Addition to Union City. Floyd Garver erected a beautiful home on that spot that in later years is surrounded by ugly encroachment perpetrated by the Body Company.  In 1937 we purchased the house at 1011 West Oak Street, a part of that Mason's Addition and lived there until moving to Ohio in 1954.  A further note:  my father, Harry E. Buckingham, and his contractor boss, Billy Stauffer,, built this very house some 25 years before.

They had the following children:

+ 107 M i Harry Earl Buckingham was born 8 Jul 1881 and died 1957.
+ 108 M ii Grover Cleveland Buckingham was born 30 Oct 1884 and died 1948.
