A note in my records describes directions on how to get to Sangamon County Poorhouse Cemetery. Sangamon County Poorhouse is 1 1/2 miles east of Buffalo. Old 36-E to Luke Gaule farm. Go to end of farm and turn right at first road. Go about 1/2 mile. The note says Mr. Howard Eldridge lives on Luke Gaule farm 364-4861.
Her father, Jacob Jackson was born Bet. March - November 1789 in Pa, and died December 16, 1863 in Hagerstown, Washington Co., Md. He married Mary (Polly) Tracy September 30, 1812 in Hagerstown, Washington Co., MD. She was born Bef. May 1792, and died June 18, 1872 in Ashland, Ashland Co., OH.
He served in the War of 1812 according to the History of Sangamon County, pg. 1633.
In 1900 she is in the Census living with Levi and Emaline Smith.

Was a seaman on Porter's fleet during the Civil War.
Died at his residence. 1066 North 5th St. He moved to Sangamon County, IL after the War. He died from complications from injuries from a fall. He was visiting his brother John S. Smith in Vicksburg, Ms when he fell.

3. John L.2 Smith (John1) was born March 18, 1848 in Perry Township, Ashland Co., OH., and died November 22, 1921 in Natchez, Adams Co, MS. He married (1) Mary. She was born 1852 in OH. He married (2) Anna (Richards) Barber April 08, 1882 in Decatur, IL, daughter of T. Richards and Alice Kimbole. She was born Abt. 1860.
Notes for John L. Smith:
I'm confused about his middle initial. In my records, it states that his middle initial is L., but in Levi's obituary it said that he was visiting his brother John S.
Fought in the Civil war. Enlisted when he was 14 years old as a Private, Co I, 65th Illinois Volunteer Infantry. On September 15, 1862, he was captured and paroled at Harper's Ferry, Virginia and went on record as a deserter. He was missing for over a year. He reinlisted on January 15, 1864, as a Private in Co I, 4th Michigan Volunteers. On July 31, 1864, hw was captured at Suscuch Railroad and paroled March 24, 1865. He was honorably discharged at Columbus, OH on April 24, 1865.
John never did receive his pension because the government maintained that he deserted at Harper's Ferry.

He married Anna Belle Keys November 04, 1905 in Christian Church of Springfield, IL, daughter of Charlie Kee and Louisa Bryan. She was born November 03, 1885 in Mexico, MO, and died September 30, 1965 in East Alton, IL.

He was an employee of the Western Cartage Company since 1915.
He was a forman at Olin Mathieson Chemical Corp. for 35 years before his retirement in 1949.
He also served as a member kof the East Alton Board of Education for a period of 20 years. He was president of the PTA organization and was a Trustee for the Villiage of East Alton for three terms. He was a lifetime member of the Management Club of Olin Mathieson Corp., and a charter member of the Westerner Club, and originated the Western Gardens during World War II. Gardening was his hobby. He died from a stroke caused by stress of an operation for kidney stones. He died after 6 weeks in a coma in a nursing home in Alabama.

Was a member of the American Red Cross and served as a board member. She also taught the Gleaners Class of the First Methodist Church for 27 years. Annabelle told a newspaper that she didnt have any real hobbies, but Raymond said that her hobby is her kindness and her thoughtfulness.
One newspaper article about their marriage states that they were one of the most charming and popular couples in East Alton. Both were young at heart and spirit and were noted for their humor and tireless activities.
Both were members of the Westerner Club and the Methodist Church of East Alton where they taught Sunday School.
Raymond and Anna Belle had 4 infant sons that died early in their marriage.
