Notes for Herman Rothe:
Germany was going through a period of constant fighting and political pressures when Herman left his country. His decision to leave was probably caused by his distaste for fighting, for he was quiet, hard working and peace loving in nature.
After landing in New Orleans, where he worked for awhile, then moving up to Illinois, to a spot just across the Mississippi River from St. Louis, Missouri. After saving up one thousand dollars, he went back to Germany. On his way to his hometown, he stopped at a local dance where he met his wife to be.
After working as a farm hand, he purchased a farm which is known as the "Edw. Fitzimmons Place," located in Piasa Township. They say he bought it because of the rolling hills and the natural resources (Piasa Creek and coal).
Herman and Cathryn were married by the Justice of the Peace, John Flaunn, on the Nurnberger Farm, witnessed by Fritz Hunda and Faitz Schnitz.
Herman received his citizenship papers on Monday October 15, 1888, in the state of Illinois. Presiding Judge was Hon. H. H. Goodrich of the County Court. Testimony from George W. Timell and John Thaumr was heard for Herman.
