JULY 28 -- It has been years since grain has been brought to this market in such quantities as for several days past; and this morning all the men in town are busy loading cars. The corn shellers are also at work and cars scarce. Farmers are about through stacking grain except those who intend threshing out of the shock. Wheat is of excellent quality and yielding from 20 to 30 bushels per acre. We had three nice showers of rain the first of last week which was badly needed, but a few days of wet weather is needed to bring the corn crop out. Some few have commenced plowing for wheat of which there will be more sown than ever before, providing the corn does not blow down so bad that seeding cannot be done therein. A terrible wind and rain storm passed a few miles north of us Friday evening doing a great deal of damage to the corn . . . . Considerable sickness in this vicinity. Lafayette Wright lost a child last week from flux, and John Young also died with same disease on Wednesday last . . . .
