Passing of an Old Pioneer

After several months of declining health, Mrs. Catherine A. Young passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Wm. Long, of Fountain Green, at the advanced age of 87 years, 4 months and 22 days.

Catherine Ann Wyman was born in Pittsburg, Pa., July 21, 1826.  When a child of 12 years she came with her parents to Illinois.  The family first settled at Warsaw, later removing to the vicinity of Blandinsville, where this daughter grew to womanhood and where she resided until her marriage to Jesse Young in 1846.  Then located on a farm near Burnside, where she passed many years, years that were filled with the cares and responsibilities attendant upon the rearing of a large family.  To Mr. and Mrs. Young were born fourteen children.  Six only survive to miss and to mourn the mother love which has blessed their lives for so long a time.  The remaining members of the family are, Mrs. Wm. Long of Ft. Green, Mrs. John Butler of this vicinity, Mrs. Wm. Ewing and Mrs. Frank Wilcox of Pontoosuc, Mrs. J. M. Jacobs of Streator and Henry Young of Burnside.  There are also thirty-two grandchildren and thirty-eight great grandchildren.

Upon the death of her husband in 1902 Mrs. Young came to Ft. Green and has since made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Wm. Long, whose faithful care and loving devotion did much to brighten the mother's declining years and brighten her span of life.

Surely much of this world's joy and sorrow, much of its pleasure and pain have been the portion of this good woman during so long an earthly pilgrimage.  The playmates of her childhood, the companions of her youth and the friends of her maturer years, have one by one passed on, while she lingered here.  Her great vitality and active strength were long held in possession.  Very gradually, as the years passed, the weaknesses and infirmities of age became evident.  But she retained in unusual degree her bodily health and mental clearness and life's closing time will remain a pleasant happy memory to her dear ones who were devoted in ministering to their mother's needs.  The last four months have shown a rapid decline and very peacefully the long pilgrimage ended at the Celestial City.

Mrs. Young many years ago made a public profession of her christian belief and for nearly half a century has been a faithful member of the Methodist church.  In her quiet unassuming way she has endeavored to "do justly, love mercy and walk humbly with her God."  The loving impulse of her heart and the unselfish ministry which filled her days, gave evidence of her purpose to do her duty, faithfully and well.  Her affectionate interest went out to those who needed her help and many good deeds and neighborly kindnesses enshrine her memory in the hearts of those who knew and loved her here.

She was devoted to her family, giving of her home and strength in patient service for her dear ones.  She was a mother who will be held in grateful, affectionate remembrance long after she has passed to the reward of her labors.      M. W. B.

Our dearest friends can we forget,
        Altho' they've passed death's silent
            river,
They live within our memory yet,
And in our hearts will live forever.
