Funeral Rites for
Rev. Morgan L. Webb
Are Held Sunday

Funeral services for the Rev. Morgan L. Webb of Carthage were held Sunday, Dec. 8, at 1:30 p.m. in Trinity Lutheran church in Carthage, the Rev. Richard E. Boye officiating.  Music was furnished by a quartet, Fred Ufkes, M. T. Monson, Theodore Geissler and L. W. VanWinkle, accompanied by William Roth at the organ.  Pallbearers were O. B. Dickinson, Merlin Gibson, William C. Hayes, Henry Wachtendorf, Lee Murphy and J. A. Vance.  Burial was in Moss Ridge cemetery.

Mr. Webb died Thursday, Dec. 5, in Memorial hospital in Carthage.

Born in Appanoose township Sept. 15, 1876, he was a son of George W. and Ellen Lewis Webb.  He received his education at Maple Grove country school, Carthage College academy and graduated from Carthage College in 1899.  While attending Carthage College he decided on the ministry as a profession.  He entered Hamma divinity school at Wittenberg College in Springfield, Ohio, graduating in 1901.  He was ordained by the Illinois synod of the Lutheran Church.

His first charge was in Murphysboro, where he served four years.  For the next 10 years he was pastor in Camden, Ind., at St. Peter Lutheran church.  He also served a term as president of the northern synod of Indiana.

On Oct. 1, 1902, he was married to Bertha Lane of Carthage, by the Rev. C. W. Sifferd.

In 1916, due to ill health, Rev. and Mrs. Webb returned to the Lane farm southeast of Carthage where they have since lived.  During these years he served as acting pastor of Trinity Lutheran church for one year and performed many ministerial acts in the community.

A surprise dinner was held for the Webbs on their 55th wedding anniversary last October.

Surviving are the widow; a son, John, of Godfrey; four grandchildren, Susan, David, Carol and Jean of Godfrey; two brothers, William of Bridgeport, Conn., and Jasper of Nauvoo.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Mrs. Blanche Schofield, and an infant son.
