Funeral services for Elder Claude E. Webb, 72, of Bentley were held Friday, Sept. 3, at 2 p.m. in the Kilgore Memorial home in Carthage with Elder Vernon Hopkins officiating. Mrs. Ralph Denison was the organist. The vocalists were Charles Prior, Lois Hopkins, Arlyn Hopkins, Ruth Hopkins, Norma Poland, Alice Dittmer, Joy Dittmer, Elaine Dittmer, and Dennis Stremmel. Casket bearers were Ralph Wickert, James Fleming, Charles Husted, Leonard Poland, Walter Pile, and Junior Dittmer. Burial was in the Harmony township cemetery near Bentley.
Elder Webb died Tuesday, Aug. 31, at 9 p.m. in Memorial hospital in Carthage where he had been a patient for one day. He had become ill early Tuesday morning and entered the hospital shortly after 8 o'clock.
Born April 5, 1893 in Vermont, he was the son of John and Lucinda Osborn Webb. He married Winnie Mae Bandle in Lewistown Dec. 6, 1914. They came to the Bentley Community and had lived in that area all their married life.
He had been elder of the Providence Baptist church east of Bentley for 34 years retiring in 1960. Even after retirement he continued in the work of the church and also enjoyed building and repairing things for friends.
Mr. and Mrs. Webb celebrated their golden wedding anniversary with open house in Bentley Dec. 6, 1964.
Surviving with his widow are four daughters, Mrs. Ray Jones of Bentley, Mrs. Paul Allen of LaHarpe, Mrs. Max Briggs of Memphis, Mo., and Mrs. Woodrow Ganion of Keokuk, Iowa; two sons, Raymond of Bentley and George of Carthage; 21 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and a brother, George, in Quincy.
He was preceded in death by four brothers, Oliver, Lawrence, Charlie, and Oscar, and three sisters, Irene, Maude, and Cora.
