Lucy Emily Scott

The following obituary was written by a granddaughter and read at the funeral of Mrs. Walton:

Lucy Emily Scott, daughter of Moses and Harriet Scott, was born on a farm near Plymouth November 4, 1850 and departed this life March 12, 1924 at St. Josephs hospital Keokuk, Iowa.

Her girlhood was spent on a farm in the Mt. Pleasant neighborhood where she grew to womanhood.  On April 4, 1872 she was united in marriage with David Walton, who with their two children remain to mourn the loss of a loving and faithful wife and mother.

Shortly after her marriage she gave her heart to God and joined the Christian church at Mt. Pleasant of which church she remained a faithful member until her death although she attended the church at this place since moving this locality.

Mrs. Walton was the mother of three children.  The first, a daughter, died in infancy.  This devoted mother had always enjoyed perfect health until about eight weeks ago when she was taken ill.  Only a week ago she submitted to an operation in the hope of bettering her condition, but her hopes seemed vain and although everything that medical skill and loving hearts could do to prevent, she was too weak to stand the shock of the operation and peacefully slept away going on to meet and greet the loved one gone before.

Seldom do we meet with such a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother.  No sacrifice was too great for her to make for her family and friends.  The beautiful heritage she leaves them is her abiding faith in her Saviour, her influence for good in their lives and the memory of her upright example, a heritage far above rubies or wealth of gold.

She leaves to mourn her loss her loving husband, two sons, Ed., of Bowen and Frank of Miami, Florida; eight grandchildren and one great grandson, one sister, Mary Baker of Carthage; and three brothers, Taylor Scott of Benton Harbor, Mich.; Perry of Ft. Smith, Arkansas and Elijah of Quincy also several nephews and nieces besides a host of friends who will sadly miss her presence among them.

The funeral was held at the Christian church Friday afternoon, conducting by Rev. Taylor, the pastor, burial at the Mt. Pleasant cemetery.  The following men were the pallbearers Frank Griffin, Cisco Childers, Lester Hoover, Harry Jennings, Rhett Thompson and Walter Nichon.  The mixed choir that furnished the music was H. L. O'Brien, Mrs. W. L. Clark and Walter Scott with Miss Ruby Wiley at the piano.  There were many beautiful flowers sent by relatives and friends showing the esteem in which this good woman was held.
