Sherman Andrew Vance

WEST POINT, Ill. -- Sherman Andrew Vance, 80, of West Point, died at 1:39 p.m. Thursday (Dec. 12, 1996) in McDonough District Hospital in Macomb.

Born Dec. 14, 1915, in Denver, Ill., he was a son of William Allison and Lydia Ann Akers Vance.  He married M. Roberta McTee July 24, 1937, in Kahoka, Mo.  She survives.

Mr. Vance was a lifetime resident of the Denver, Ill., area.  He attended Douglas Grade School, and graduated from Bowen High School in 1933.  He farmed in the Denver area, and raised pure-bred Duroc hogs.  Mr. Vance sold advertising for Hog Breeder Magazine in Illinois, Indiana, Ohio and Wisconsin.  He worked as a feed salesman for M & M Columbian and AgriKing.  He was presently working with M & M Livestock Products Co.  He had worked as an auctioneer, and published "Guide Poems of Faith," volumes I and II.

Mr. Vance taught Sunday school and was active in West Point Assembly of God Church and Loraine Christian Church.  He was a member of Full Gospel Business Men Association, Anti-thief Association and Hancock County Farm Bureau.  Mr. Vance was an avid gardener and sold tomatoes at the Farmer's Market.

Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Francis (Bonnie J.) Allen of West Point; Connie J. Marshall of Lake St. Louis, Mo., and Mrs. Kevin (Judy L.) Rund of Springfield; three sons, Robert A. Vance of Springfield; Dr. William M. Vance of Sedalia, Mo., and Jeffrey J. Vance of Mendon; a brother, Dr. William A. Vance of Hamilton; 22 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, Sherman D. Vance, who was killed in action in the Vietnam War; a brother, Dr. Thomas W. Vance; and a sister, Maxine L. Veach.

Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. today in the Lamporte Funeral Home in Carthage by the Rev. Russell Corrigan.  Burial will be in Harmony Cemetery in rural Carthage.

Memorials may be made to Harmony Cemetery Association or Loraine Christian Church.
