Henry J. Ufkes, 92, a lifelong Carthage farmer and livestock buyer, died Wednesday, April 27, 2005, in Memorial Hospital in Carthage.
He was born Jan. 12, 1913, in Basco, a son of Eielt and Annie Schuster Ufkes. On Feb. 22, 1936, he married Alpha F. Faulkner in Carthage. She died Jan. 25, 2003.
He is survived by one son, Jack (Bev) Ufkes of rural Carthage; four grandchildren, Brent (Angie) Ufkes of Carthage, Brad (Anne) Ufkes of Carthage, Traci (Ronnie) Johnson of Carthage, and Tonya (Eric) Boyer of Carthage; 11 great grandchildren, Ashley, Austin, Addison, Tyler, Cody and Brittany Ufkes, Haeli, Skyler, and Ethan Johnson, Braxton and Bailey Boyer; one sister, Elvena (Howard) Emmert of Carthage; one brother, Junius (Rose) Ufkes of Carthage; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; one sister, Lena A. Kennedy in 2001; and one cousin, John Fooken who was raised by Henry's parents.
He resided in the home of Esther Kleopfer, his devoted caretaker, for the last several years. He grew up in rural Carthage, attended country schools and attended Carthage High School. He was a lifelong area farmer, and was well known for his corn fed beef, and for raising and breeding purebred Polled Hereford cattle. He was also well known and respected as a cattle buyer for Morrell Packing Co. at Ottumwa, Iowa, and Illini Beef at Geneseo. He was one of the founding members of the 4-H livestock auction and through his promotional efforts helped make the sale a great success. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Carthage, where he served on the church council, was a Sunday school teacher for many years and served as Sunday school superintendent.
Funeral services were held Saturday, April 30, in Trinity Lutheran Church in Carthage. Rev. Greg G. Busboom officiated. Burial followed in the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery in rural Carthage.
Memorials in the name of Henry J. Ufkes have been established for Trinity Lutheran Church Welcome Center.
