Arlie Wayne Tippett, 82, son of James Emmett and Margaret Agnus McKnight Tippett, was born June 19, 1901, in rural Scotland County. Arlie passed away November 20, 1983, in the University Hospital in Iowa City, Iowa.
Arlie was united in marriage to Lois Louise Croley, December 16, 1925, in Bloomfield, Iowa. To this marriage two daughters were born.
Arlie is survived by his wife, Lois; two daughters, Alma M. Brown of Phoenix, Arizona, and Dorothy Louise Bell of Joplin, Missouri; two grandsons, Warren E. Brown, Jr. of Boise, Idaho, Timothy W. Bell of Austin, Texas; three granddaughters, Margaret L. Figueroa, Glendale, Arizona, Belinda Green of St. Joseph, Missouri and Suzanne N. Bell of Joplin, Missouri; six great-grandchildren, Matt, James and Megan Figueroa, Ami and Amanda Green and Wendy Brown.
Arlie was preceded in death by his mother and father; two brothers, Virgil and Arthur; two sisters, Verna and Ivy.
Arlie spent his entire life in Scotland County, growing up south of Memphis. He was a member of the Concord Methodist Church. Arlie was known as a man with "vision", a man who liked to see things improve. Much of his time and energy was spent in making change and progress. During the depression years he built one of the first service stations and bulk tank plants in Scotland County; in the 40's he built the Scotland County Sales Barn; in the 60's he built the Grandview Motel. Arlie also farmed extensively and was a well known farm and livestock trader in Northeast Missouri.
"Doc", as he was affectionately known, will long be remembered as a humble man, a man of his word, who "cared" for his family, friends and community.
Funeral services were held on November 23, 1983, at 2:00 p.m. in the First Christian Church, Memphis, Missouri. The Rev. Kenneth Campbell conducted services. Organist was Ann Luther.
