Column 6JOHN HENRY THOMPSON
John Henry Thompson was born in Hancock township, April 8, 1863, a son of Andrew and Margaret Polite Thompson, being one of eleven children, namely: Edward, Alvin, Thomas, William, Walter, Amanda, Parlee, Ruth, Mary and Luella. He grew to manhood in the neighborhood where his birth occurred and in the year of 1886 was married to Amanda Riggins, to which union one child was born, dying in infancy. His wife, Amanda, died twenty-one years ago, the child and wife being buried in Oak Grove cemetery.
On June 30, 1914, he married Mrs. Adaline Kern Knowles; there were no children born to this union, but three step-sons came into the family with Mrs. Knowles, being her children; Lloyd of Plymouth, Earl of Carthage, and Estel at home, which made a very happy family. Mr. Thompson gave these young men the most tender and attentive affection.
He lived fourteen years in Carthage, during which time he served the city faithfully as marshal, was deputy sheriff under several administrations, and was elected constable, filling all of these places with honor and gained the respect and admiration of his fellow townsmen. About two years ago they moved back to the farm on account of the condition of his health, but the decline continued until a week ago, he went to the Marietta-Phelps hospital in Macomb for treatment. Everything that medical skill and good nursing could do seemed to be of no avail, and the end came Saturday about noon, closing a useful life. At a very early age, having been under the influence of a Christian home, he became a member of the Oak Grove Christian church under the preaching of Dr. Booz, and was baptized into this fellowship by Elder Sherman of Ferris, Illinois.
He is survived by his wife, Adaline, and the following brothers and sisters: Edward, Alvin, William, Walter, and Amanda, and his three step-sons; the other brother and sisters having preceded him in death, being Thomas, Parlee, Ruth, Mary and Luella, besides the numerous friends and relatives.
Funeral was held Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock at Oak Grove church, with Rev. Fred S. Nichols officiating. Burial at Oak Grove cemetery.
