Estes R. Thompson, 96, of LaHarpe died Monday, Dec. 21, in the LaHarpe-Davier Health Care Center in LaHarpe.
He was born Oct. 12, 1896, in LaHarpe, the son of James Ernest Sr. and Estella Ketcham Thompson. He married Anna Berkshire on Feb. 22, 1919, in Galesburg. She survives.
He was a 1916 graduate of LaHarpe High School. He farmed near LaHarpe until 1963, at which time they moved to town and he worked at Banks and Beals Funeral Home until 1983. He was a school board director at North Prairie School and served as a director of the Dallas City Mutual Insurance. He was a 74-year member of the LaHarpe Lodge AF and AM No. 195. He was a member of the LaHarpe Union Church, where he taught Sunday School for 30 years.
Surviving with his wife are one son, James Thompson of East Moline; three daughters, Alice Kelso and Ann Lundeen, both of East Moline, and Eleanor Shutwell of LaHarpe; two sisters, Mildred Clarke of East Peoria, and Elizabeth Thompson of LaHarpe; nine grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Jane Thompson; a sister, Ruth Cravens; a brother, Ernest Thompson, and two grandchildren, Linda and Ken Shutwell.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 24, at Banks and Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe with the Rev. Bruce Goettsche officiating. Burial will be in the LaHarpe Cemetery. Visitation will be after noon today, Wednesday. Masonic Rites will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday. Family visitation will be held Thursday from 9 a.m. until the time of services.
A memorial has been established for the LaHarpe Union Church.
