Dawn Thomas, 27, of Buckeye, Ariz., formerly of Hamilton and Wayland, Mo., died Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2006, in Phoenix after a lengthy illness.
She was born Aug. 10, 1979, a daughter of Donald L. Akers and Margie Londrie Russell in Keokuk, Iowa.
She is survived by her mother, Margie Russell of Buckeye; her father, Donald L. Akers of Hamilton; one sister, Rachel (Randy) James of Luray, Mo.; three brothers, Russell (Teresa) Thomas of Buckeye, Brian and Brent Akers of Burlington, Iowa; one niece, Kristin Russell of Luray; two nephews, Kurtis Russell of Buckeye and Robert Thomas of Green Forest, Ark.; many other nieces, nephews, uncles, and aunts; her faithful companions, Rascal, her poodle, and Diva, her service dog.
She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Helen and Kenneth Londrie and Frank and Ethyl Akers.
She graduated from Wheaton High School in Wheaton, Mo., in 1998. She then went on to college at Culver-Stockton in Missouri and SCC in Keokuk. She was a member of the First Christian Church in Hamilton and was also an active volunteer in Power Paws, a nonprofit organization that trains service dogs. She was an avid country music and NASCAR fan. One of her favorite hobbies was playing Texas Hold'em internet poker. She also enjoyed traveling with her family.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Dec. 15, at Printy Funeral Home in Carthage. Burial will follow in the Oakwood Cemetery in Hamilton. Visitation is from 3 to 8 p.m. with family meeting friends from 6 to 8 p.m.
A memorial fund has been established.
