BERTHA SYMMONDS

June 16, 1905 -- Feb. 7, 1994

Bertha Elizabeth Symmonds, 88, of Carthage, died Monday, Feb. 7, at Montebello Manor Health Care Center in Hamilton.

She was born June 16, 1905, in Arbela, Mo., the daughter of Oscar and Tabitha Pryor Smith.  She married Paul Symmonds on Dec. 22, 1923, in Kahoka, Mo.  He died on Jan. 13, 1978.

She is survived by a son, James Edward Symmonds of Laton, Calif.; eight granddaughters; four grandsons; and several great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by two daughters, Margaret Jane McDaniel and Dorothy Alice Symmonds; a son, Samuel Paul Symmonds; and two grandsons.

Mrs. Symmonds had lived in Carthage for 65 years and was a member of First United Methodist Church.  She was a 50 year member of Grace Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star and a 50 year member of the White Shine of Jerusalem.  She was also a member of Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and the Retired Senior Volunteer Program at Carthage.

Funeral services were held Thursday, Feb. 10, at First United Methodist Church in Carthage with Dr. Jeffrey Kelley officiating.  Burial was held in Oakwood Cemetery in Hamilton.

Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church Bell Choir.
