William C. Strong

Funeral services for William C. Strong, 85, resident of Carthage for 35 years, were held Sunday, Sept. 11, at 1:30 p.m. in the Neiser Funeral Home, the Rev. Donald E. Skiles officiating.  Mrs. Ralph Denison was the soloist.  Pallbearers were Ralph Denison, William Huey, James Westfall, John Cole, Lee Young and John Jacoby.  Burial was in Harmony cemetery.

Mr. Strong died Thursday afternoon in St Francis hospital in Macomb.  He had been in a Bushnell nursing home for several months.  He was the last of a family of 10 children.

Born in Floyd county, Va., May 31, 1875, he was a son of Oden C. and Mary Emanuel Strong.  He was first married to Delphia Phillips July 25, 1895.  She died Sept. 21, 1920.  Later he married Josie Hughett, who survives.

He came to Illinois in 1905 and farmed for many years.  Later he was employed by the Huey Seed company, continuing in this capacity until forced to retire because of ill health.

He was a member of the Methodist church and the Bentley lodge No. 412 of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows.

Surviving with the widow are a daughter, Mrs. Ola James of Carthage; three sons, Leslie of Tipton, Ia., Lee of Glen Ellyn and Kenneth of Geneseo; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

A son, Moten, died Oct. 11, 1918 and a daughter, Mrs. Essie Allen in 1950.  Two other sons died in infancy.
