DONALD A. SPARROW

April 23, 1926 -- Oct. 15, 2006

Donald Alvy Sparrow, 80, of Quincy, died Sunday, Oct. 15, 2006, at Blessing Hospital in Quincy.

He was born on April 23, 1926, in Loraine, a son of Alva James and Mabel Eveline Adair Sparrow.  He married Lucy Charlotte Davies on May 10, 1947, in Elko, Nev.  She died April 10, 1990.

He is survived by two daughters, Diana Voss of Keokuk, Iowa, and Tina (Gary) Watznauer of Ft. Madison, Iowa; one son, Rodney (Kathryn) Sparrow of West Point; two step-sons, Bill (Bobbie) Dye and Buddy Dye, all of Keystone, Fla.; nine grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; three step great-grandchildren; two sisters, Dorothy Newell and Lucy (Bob) Lohmeyer, all of Quincy; three brothers, Robert (Jessie) Sparrow of West Point, Dean (Donna) Sparrow of Hampton, and Lawrence Sparrow of Queen Creek, Ariz.

He was preceded in death by his wife; one son, Kim Sparrow; and one sister, Wilma Powers.

He graduated from the one-room schoolhouse near Loraine before serving his country with the U.S. Navy during WWII and during the Korean Conflict.  Upon his return from duty he went to work for Hushaw Implement, later opening his own farm implement repair shop that he called Sparrows Service.  After his retirement he began driving vehicles for various dealerships in the area.  He was a member of the Bear Creek American Legion.  He loved fishing, reading and playing cards and served as an election official.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 19, at the Hunter Funeral Home in Mendon, with Rev. Jay Zetterland officiating.  Burial will follow in the New Providence Cemetery in Ursa.  Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. tonight, Wednesday, Oct. 18, at the Hunter Funeral Home in Mendon.

Memorials may be given to the West Point First Responders Fund.
