Column 3DEATH OF MRS.
NANCY SMITH
HERE SUNDAYLast Rites Were Held
Here YesterdayNancy Jane Smith, 89, passed away at her home here Sunday evening following a long illness which had kept her confined to her bed for the past two months. She was one of the county’s oldest native residents, a beloved mother to her family and valued friend to her many friends.
Nancy Jane Cameron was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Elisha Cameron and was born in Hancock township on August 13, 1848. She grew to womanhood in that vicinity and on February 20, 1871 was united in marriage to Lewis Jack Smith at the home of her parents.
Mr. and Mrs. Smith have spent their entire married life of 66 years in this vicinity, with the exception of four years in which they engaged in farming in Missouri. During recent years with advanced age making it impossible for them to continue in their life occupation of farming they moved into town where they have since resided.
Mrs. Smith was a member of the Oak Grove church and was active in attendance so long as her health permitted. Throughout her married life she was a devoted and loving wife and mother. The Smith home was always open to relatives and friends and their married life has been one of happy association with the entire community who knew them as sincere and true friends.
Mr. and Mrs. Smith were the parents of nine children, six of whom now survive. They are Alva, of Hancock township; Edgar, Jesse and Mrs. Martha Galloway, all of Carthage; Mrs. Nellie Stoneking of Quincy; and Mrs. Frank Stodgell of Adrian. Three children now deceased, were William, who died at the age of three; James, who passed away seventeen years ago and Lewis Sherman whose death occurred six years ago. Mrs. Smith is also survived by two sisters and one brother living in Kansas. Besides the husband, children and brother and sisters, she is also survived by seventeen grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Last rites were held yesterday afternoon at Oak Grove church, Rev. Fred S. Nichols, of Carthage, officiating. Interment was in Oak Grove cemetery.
