With Load of Coal.A great shock and sorrow came to the family of Sherman Smith Monday by his sudden death. Sherman was a hard working man and worked diligently at what ever came to him to do regardless of his physical condition. He worked all summer with A. Munson on road work, and after that was engaged in trucking coal from Colchester.
In spite of feeling very unfit, he insisted on going to the McClure bank near Colchester for coal after dinner. Returning with his load, he felt a seizure coming on him, and drove into the Logan Booz filling station at Tennessee and asked him to call his wife and have her get W. A. Lane to bring her over.
Mrs. Smith was unable to locate Mr. Lane but Mr. and Mrs. Charles Alley took her immediately with all haste, and they arrived to find a doctor with Mr. Smith. Mr. Smith was just breathing his last. The body was held until six o'clock for a coroner's inquest, and then removed to the Hearne Undertaking establishment in this city.
Louis Sherman Smith was the son of L. J. and Nancy (Cameron) Smith, and was born in Hancock township May 20, 1887. On Oct. 28, 1908, he married Hazel Porter to which happy union were born five children, Harold J. who graduated from Carthage high school last spring, Bertha D., Freida who died in infancy in 1918, Katherine aged 11, and Jessie LeRoy aged 7, who mourn with the wife and mother this good husband and father. He is also survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. L. J. Smith, and by three sisters, Mrs. Mattie Galloway of Carthage, Mrs. Nellie Stoneking of Augusta, Mrs. Maggie Stodgell of Plymouth, and three brothers, Albert Alva, Edgar Lee and Jesse Cameron all of this vicinity.
