Carthage Man
Held SundayFuneral services for Jesse E. Smith, 88, retired farmer, were held Sunday afternoon in the Carthage Christian church. Rev. Leland Beck officiated and burial was in Oak Grove cemetery in Hancock township.
Miss Mary Lou Woods and Mrs. Leonard Miller sang, accompanied by Mrs. Lowell Smith.
Pallbearers were Junior Carle, Vernon Smith, William Carle, Lawrence Smith, Clifton Carle and Richard Smith.
Smith, lifelong resident of the Carthage community, died May 19 at 8:40 a. m. in Memorial hospital, where he had been a patient for five days, following a stroke suffered at the home of his son, Frank. He was born Jan. 6, 1866, in Hancock county, a son of Guthrie and Martha Prior Smith.
He married Ida Mae Printy June 19, 1887, and lived in the Oak Grove community until moving to Carthage. He had made his home with his son, Frank, and daughter, Mrs. Jessie Mosley, since her death.
He joined the Oak Grove Christian church when they lived in that community. He enjoyed the annual birthday gathering held each year in his honor, when his family was all present.
Surviving are the son, Frank of Carthage; two daughters, Mrs. Jessie Mosley of Carthage and Mrs. Nancy Haist of Bushnell; 35 grandchildren; 59 great grandchildren, and five great great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, three sons, Grover, Leslie and Merlin, and a daughter, Mrs. Elva Carle.
