Rites Held Aug. 5Jesse Cameron Smith, son of Lewis Jackson and Nancy Jane Cameron Smith, was born in Oak Grove community on March 31, 1881 and passed away August 2, 1948, at the age of 67 years, 4 months and 2 days.
His grandparents and parents were of old pioneer stock who aided in the settlement and building of this community. It was in this community he attended school and grew to manhood. In early life he united with the Oak Grove church during evangelistic services held there.
He purchased and operated a farm for several years in Hancock township and after disposing of the farm, he moved to Carthage, living with his brother Sherman and family until the time of the latter's death, after which he went to care for his aged parents until their deaths. For the past five years he has lived at the Wyman Smith home where he was given every attention during his failing health. His death came quickly and suddenly, while living in this home. He was never married.
Jesse, as he was familiarly known by his many friends, was honest, industrious and always ready to lend a helping hand when the opportunity came his way. Unless he said good of anyone he said nothing.
Four brothers have preceded him in death: Frank, who died in infancy, James Harvey, Lewis Sherman and Edgar Lee. He is survived by one brother, Alva, of Tennessee, three sisters; Mrs. Mattie Galloway, Carthage; Mrs. Nellie Stoneking, Quincy, and Mrs. Maggie Stodgell, West Point, besides several nieces and nephews and other relatives. He will be missed by all, more especially in his late home, where he loved to be.
Funeral services were held from The Elms on Thursday, August 5 at 2:00 p. m., with the Rev. Frank W. Leonard in charge, with burial in Oak Grove cemetery. Miss Ellen Lenix and Mrs. Ethel Callahan sang two numbers.
Pall bearers were all nephews of the deceased and included Wyman Smith, Harold Smith, Jesse Smith, Wayne, Frank and Merlin Galloway.
