Column 5Death has claimed two of Hancock county's pioneer residents, Mrs. Dicy P. Smith, aged 86 years, 10 months and 3 days, and Samuel Lenix, aged 83 years, 9 months and 5 days.
Mrs. Dicey P. Smith
Mrs. Dicey P. Smith died Nov. 12, at the home of her son, W. A. Lane, east of Carthage.
She was born Jan. 9, 1832, in St. Marys township, and has spent her entire life in this county, within three townships, viz: St. Marys, Hancock and Carthage. She was the daughter of Jonathan and Lavina (Ray) Pryor, both the parents having been natives of Tennessee.
She was first married to James Lane, who died in 1878, to which union were born two children, W. A. Lane and Mrs. Alena Porter, the latter having died a number of years ago.
She was later married to Caleb B. Smith, one of the pioneers of Hancock county, who died in 1891, at the age of 91 years. After his death she lived on the homestead near Middle Creek for a number of years, later going to make her home with her son, W. A. Lane, who lived east of the city. Some eight years ago he moved to the city and Aunt Dicey accompanied them and it was a familiar sight on Sunday morning to see her seated in her favorite chair at the Christian church, of which she has been a member since 16 years of age, having joined the church at Old Biery, which is familiar to our older residents.
Up until the time she suffered a paralytic stroke, while visiting with Mrs. Emma Magin in this city, some two weeks ago, she was in exceptionally good health, and her memory as to past events was very vivid, she being able to recall names of members of the older families without the least hesitancy and associate them with their family history. Indeed, she was a good christian woman and her habits having been moderate in every particular, she reaped the results of her long life, through many days of happiness and health.
Funeral services will be held from the home of her son, W. A. Lane, two miles east of Carthage, Thursday morning at 10 a. m., Rev. E. M. Smith to officiate. Burial at Pickens cemetery.
