MARCH 30. -- Died, at his home in St. Marys township, on the evening of the 25th, Caleb B. Smith.  The deceased was born in the state of Virginia Dec. 1st, 1801.  His first wife died in 1876, and in August, 1878, he married Mrs. Dicey P. Lane, who survives him.  By his first wife he was the father of ten children, six of whom are living, three sons and three daughters, all respectable members of society.  Mr. Smith came to Illinois in 1838, and settled on a farm adjoining the one on which he died.  He had been an active and earnest member of the Christian church for more than 50 years, and was one of the founders of the church here.  He was a man of positive opinions, honorable in his dealings with his fellow men, and prompt in the discharge of all his duties, both public and private.  He had been a man of great industry, and nobly bore his part in the trials and hardships incident to early pioneer life.  Death seemed to have come from no well defined disease.  The machinery of life, from the friction of nearly a century of active use, moved slower and slower, and finally worn out, stopped, stood still.  Burial at Mt. Pleasant cemetery on the 28th.
