Vernon Shutwell, 88, of LaHarpe, died Tuesday, March 27, 2001, at the LaHarpe-Davier Health Care Center in LaHarpe. He was born August 19, 1912, in Disco, the son of Fred and Margie Maynard Shutwell. On May 11, 1939, he married Virginia Alton in Middletown, Iowa.
He was a graduate of LaHarpe High School and farmed in the LaHarpe area for 42 years. He was an excellent mechanic and often did repairs and welding for neighbors. He loved to play pool and spend time going to farm sales or where other farmers were known to be. He was always there when friends and neighbors needed help. He was a member of the LaHarpe Union Church.
He is survived by his wife, Virginia; three daughters, Mrs. Richard (Sharon) White of Tucson, Ariz., Karen Sinclair of Quincy, and Mary Beth Shutwell of Joliet; one son, Jerry (Peggy) Shutwell of Biggsville; seven grandchildren, Milissa Wise, Stacey Greene, Chad Shutwell, Jennifer Thompson, Michelle Mosena, Nicholas Shutwell and Megan Shutwell; six great-grandchildren; one brother, Dale Shutwell of LaHarpe; one sister, Dorothy Baxter of Metamora; six nephews and one niece.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Kermit Shutwell.
Funeral services were held Saturday, March 31, at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe with Rev. Jonathan Hart officiating. Burial was in the LaHarpe Cemetery.
A Memorial fund has been established for the LaHarpe Union Church or the LaHarpe-Davier Health Care Center.
