GOLDEN WEDDING

The golden wedding of Mr. and Mrs. Homer Hoyt, of Webster, and Mr. and Mrs. John Shipman, of Keokuk, was celebrated at the home of the latter in Keokuk, Sunday, Sept. 14, by a rousing picnic dinner in which about one hundred twenty relatives took part, besides a number of near friends.  The wedding date proper was Sept. 10th, but owing to the widely scattered families and busy time, the picnic was held on Sunday as noted above.

The double wedding was solemnized at Carthage fifty years ago, the Rev. Head, pastor of the M. E. Church at that time, officiating.  It is a remarkable coincidence that all four of the parties are living and in fairly good health.  All of their children who are yet living were present except Will Shipman, who lives in Oregon.  A mock wedding in which Mr. Pardon Hobart, a life long friend, impersonated the minister, was held and a picture taken of the same.

Of course there was no end to the good time enjoyed and before the party broke up, a heavy purse was presented to each couple; by their children, respectively.  The two living daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Hoyt, namely, Mrs. Alice Bricker and Mrs. Julia McCoy of Mason City, Ill. each gave them a $2.50 gold coin.  It was a never to be forgotten day and we all unite with relatives in wishing for them many happy returns.  Following is a list of those present:

Mr. W. E. Warner, Mrs. Julia McCoy, Miss Alura McCoy, Mr. Roy Timmerman, Mrs. Mary Miller, C. G. Kutcher and family, Howard Hoyt and family, Morgan Hoyt, Henry Laundry and family, Horace Franklin and family, Lawrence Boston and family, Virgil Boston and family, Miss Elmira Roseleaf, Mr. and Mrs. A. DEATH OF MRS. JOHN SHIPMAN.

Mrs. Mary Catherine Shipman, the daughter of Henry and Martha (Lovell) Hall, was born at Tennessee, Illinois, June 16, 1853.  At the age of 72 years, 3 months and 29 days, she passed away at her home on 908 Johnson St., Keokuk, Iowa, after a brief illness of only four days.

She was married to John W. Shipman on September 10, 1874.  To this union were born six children: Milton Freeman, at home; William Wallace, of Portland, Oregon; Mrs. Emma Carlton, of Keokuk; and Oliver Warren, of Des Moines, Ia., of the living; and Henry Clinton and Martha Astoria, preceding her to the great beyond.  She also took into her home as a daughter, her niece, Mrs. Effie Franklin, of Valley Junction, Ia., at the age of four.

Mrs. Shipman was converted to Christ and joined the church more than fifty years ago and kept the faith until death.

Besides a loving husband and family, she leaves to mourn her departure three sisters, two brothers, eleven grandchildren, two great grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.

Mrs. Shipman was a very loving mother and devoted wife, always working for the welfare of her family and never tiring of helping others during hours of sadness or distress.  Over a year ago she took into her care, Mrs. Mary Anderson, who was an old friend she had known in her younger days, giving her freely every care and attention her strength could provide.  She was a former resident of Carthage, leaving many friends and relatives here.

Funeral services were held from the M. P. Church, Sunday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock with Rev. Leonard officiating.  The pallbearers were six grandsons: Lawrence Boston, Gilbert Carlton, Virgil Boston, Carrol Carlton, Ernest Chance and Leslie Carlton.  Interment was in the Oakland cemetery.

A loving one from us has gone
A voice we loved is stilled,
A place is vacant in our home
      Which never can be filled.
