Basco Couple
Celebrates 60th
AnniversaryMr. and Mrs. William Sherman of Basco quietly celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary Thursday, Aug. 16, in their home.
Mr. and Mrs. Sherman were married Aug. 16, 1902 in the old Hancock county courthouse in Carthage. J. H. Wetzel, Justice of the Peace, performed the ceremony. The witnesses were Julia Tilton, sister of the bride, and S. L. McCrory.
They are the parents of three daughters, Mrs. Guy Nolen of Hamilton, Mrs. Orbra Keegan of Keokuk, Iowa, and Mrs. Harley Dean of Carthage; and three sons, Wendell of Southgate, Calif., Loren of Hamilton, and Don of Louisville, Ky. There are also 18 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.
Sherman celebrated his 81st birthday on Thursday, Aug. 2, and Mrs. Sherman will be 77 on Thursday, Sept. 6. Both are still very active. Mrs. Sherman does her own housework, and Sherman is still in the business of training harness horses, a vocation he has followed for more than 40 years. At the present time he owns and trains a trotter which he stables at the Hancock County Saddle club in Carthage.

MR. AND MRS. WM. SHERMAN
Mr. and Mrs. William Sherman celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary on Sunday, August 17.
A pot luck dinner was served at noon at the home of their daughter, Mrs. Ray Carroll of Hamilton.
Mr. and Mrs. Sherman, who now reside in Warsaw, Illinois were married at the Court House in Carthage, on August 16, 1902, with Justice of Peace J. H. Wetzel, doing the officiating. Witness were Julia Tilton, now Mrs. Julia Lorton, of LaHarpe, a sister of the bride and S. L. McCory.
Born to bless this 50 years of wedded life were six children: Mrs. Ray Carroll of Hamilton; Mrs. Orba Keegan of Warsaw; Wendell Sherman of Burbank, California; Loren Sherman of LaHarpe; Donald Sherman of Louisville, Kentucky and Mrs. Harley Dean of Carthage.
Mr. and Mrs. Sherman are the grandparents of 16 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.
Those attending the dinner for the honored guests on the 17th were: Mr. and Mrs. Ray Carroll, Mr. and Mrs. Rodney Wardlow, Vickie and Renee Sue; Mrs. Edwin Beard, Carroll and Linda; Mr. and Mrs. Bill Carroll and Donna Jean, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Fenton, Joyce, Allen, Jimmy and Nancy, all of Hamilton; Mr. and Mrs. Orbra Keegan of Warsaw and Mrs. Harley Dean, Jim, Judy and Hollis Loren of Carthage.
Unable to attend were: Mr. and Mrs. Wendell Sherman of Burbank, California; Mr. and Mrs. Donald Sherman of Louisville, Kentucky and Mr. and Mrs. Loren Sherman of LaHarpe, Illinois.

William Jessie Sherman, 91, of Warsaw, died Wednesday, (February 28, 1973) at 10:36 p.m. in St. Joseph Hospital at Keokuk, where he had been a patient for five days.
Funeral services were held Saturday at 2 p.m. in the Lamporte Funeral Home. The Rev. Charles Harris officiated. Burial was in Oakwood Cemetery.
Mr. Sherman was born August 2, 1881, at Plymouth, a son of the Rev. Louis R. and Jerishua Jane Duncan Sherman. He was married to Erma Tilton on August 16, 1902, in Carthage. He was a member of the Christian Church.
Surviving are the widow; two daughters, Margie Dean of Carthage and Vanetta Nolan of Warsaw; two sons, Robert E. of Louisville, Ky. and Wendell R. of Warsaw; a sister, Grace Williams of Burlington; 18 grandchildren; 38 great grandchildren and eight great great grandchildren.
