Sir Walter Scott
Rites Held Monday

"Passing out of the shadow
Into Eternal Day:
Why do they call it dying?
'Tis only going away."

Sir Walter Scott, eldest child and only son of Perry A. and Hattie (Browning) Scott, was born on the Scott homestead in Harmony township, near Denver, on September 1, 1875 and passed into Eternal Rest on June 6, 1947 at the age of 71 years, 9 months and 6 days.

Mr. Scott had been in declining health for many months but he became worse about three weeks ago and was taken to St. Joseph's hospital in Keokuk where all medical skill and loving care were given for his comfort.

On March 5, 1900 he was united in marriage to Olivia A. Huey and they established their home near the place of his birth.

In early manhood he united with the Mt. Pleasant Christian church and as long as his health permitted was a faithful member.

Mr. Scott was of the highest type of citizenship.  In business dealings he was upright; no one stood higher for integrity, honor and moral courage.  Though modest and retiring, as he was, he was public spirited and his passing is a great loss, not only in his home and family but to a large acquaintance of friends and neighbors.

Surviving Mr. Scott is his widow, one sister, Mrs. L. A. Harnest of Ft. Smith, Arkansas, a number of cousins and a host of friends.

Funeral services were held at the Elms on Monday afternoon at 2 p. m. conducted by Rev. Frank Leonard of the Christian church.  Mrs. Ada Clark and Mrs. Beatrice Clark of Denver sang two lovely hymns, "Under His Wings" and "Beyond the Sunset."  Pallbearers were Oscar Lutz, Henry Siegfried, Roy Walton, Ed Faulkner, Jake Redenius and Enoch Lyon Jr.  Committal services in charge of Denver lodge No. 464 A. F. & A. M. in Harmony cemetery.

Those from a distance attending the service were Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur Huey of Arenzville, Ill., Mr. and Mrs. Fred Kerr and daughter-in-law, Mrs. Edsen Kerr and little son Sterling, Joy Garnett of Keokuk, Ia., and Mr. and Mrs. Harold Magel of North Burlington.
