Column 5DEATH OF A PIONEER
Sally Ann McCubbins was born in Green Co., Kentucky, August 24th, 1834, died March 6th, 1903. She was married to Jessie Riggins June l3th, 1839. To them twelve children were born; three of whom died in infancy, Melvina died November 9, 1881, and Mrs. Rebecca Mosley, a daughter, who died March 8, 1895. The surviving children are Mrs. Sarah Gillenwater, William M., Mrs. Mary Ruddle, Mrs. Amanda Thompson, living near the old home; Mrs. Martha Maynard, of Carthage; and Sylvester and Lee, who lived at home with their mother. There are also 16 grandchildren, and 22 great grandchildren, one brother, Thomas McCubbins, in California and Mrs. Elizabeth Booz, of Carthage. Her husband died January 8, 1889, and her children and grandchildren have been a comfort to her in her old age. Mrs. Riggins was the oldest child of Joseph and Ella McCubbins and came to Illinois with them when a child. They settled in Hancock township and "Aunt Sally Ann" as she was called, died a short distance from the parental home. She united with the Christian church at an early age, and was lived a true christian life, setting a good example for her children and all with whom she met. Hers was a noble life, filled with deeds of generosity and kindness. She was a devoted wife, a loving mother and a true friend and neighbor. She will be sadly missed in the old home where "mother" has been the guiding star for so many years, but they have the satisfaction of knowing that she is only gone before and will be waiting to welcome them when they too are called to the other side. Truly a good woman has gone to her reward.
