Column 4DEATH OF A PIONEER.
JAN. 14. -- The venerable Jesse Riggin, whose death was referred to in last week's REPUBLICAN, came to this township 55 years ago. Was born in Kentucky; married about the year 1839, to Sally Ann McCubbin, sister of T. B. and W. G.; only sister of Mrs. Dr. Booz, this township. He became a member of the Christian church, New Years day, 1850. The writer and Gen. T. S. Brockman, then residing in Carthage, held here the first protracted meeting known in this locality, resulting in organizing Oak Grove congregation Disciples. Uncle Jesse remained until death an humble follower of the Nazarene. He was a quiet, inoffensive citizen; loved by all who knew him. When his serious sickness became known, the house was full of sympathizing neighbors, until the end. A large concourse followed his remains to the Belknap cemetery, where tender hands laid him beside his children gone before.
Owing to the severe illness of his daughter, Mrs. R. A. Mosley, the funeral was deferred, but will be duly announced, to take place at Oak Grove church at an early day. Another old pioneer gone; our heart is filled with sadness. Fifty years our friend, neighbor, brother-in-law, a true friend in all our troubles. Oh, how we shall miss his presence! He leaves a wife and seven children, who mourn their irreparable loss. WILLIAM BOOZ.

JAN. 14. -- There were over twenty immersions in Crooked Creek, east of St. Marys, on the 6th inst., as the result of the protracted meeting at the Baptist church at St. Marys . . . The many friends of the venerable Jesse Riggin in this vicinity, learned with much regret of his death. Mr. Riggin was one of the earliest settlers of Hancock county; an honest, upright man, and enjoyed, in the highest degree, the confidence and respect of all who knew him . . . .
