Died January 30
At Keokuk HospitalHomer Riggins, son of William and Martha Jane Gibson Riggins, was born May 8, 1875 in Hancock township, Hancock county, Illinois, and passed away in St. Joseph hospital in Keokuk, Iowa on Jan. 30 1943. He spent all of his earlier life in Oak Grove neighborhood, attending the country school and church there.
On Thanksgiving day in 1902 he was united in marriage to Miss Sadie Jenkins. To this union there were two children born, a daughter Annie and a son Leo.
Mrs. Riggins passed away in 1910 and these small children were cared for in the home of Mr. Riggins' parents. When grown, Annie became the wife of Everett Kinyon and lives in Nauvoo. When Leo reached the age of 24, he was taken suddenly ill and passed away, leaving not only his father and sister but the whole community in grief over his sudden passing.
In 1933, Mr. Riggins was united in marriage to Mrs. Minnie Witherall, who survives. They moved to Hamilton a few months ago and have occupied the property formerly known as the McCulough property in Oakwood.
In early life he became interested in trying to relieve his associates of pain and sickness and was so successful in his attempts that he went to Nevada, Missouri in 1920 and took a course in the Weltmer Institute. After his graduation he came back home and has practiced his profession successfully over a wide territory including Burlington, Iowa, Hannibal, Missouri, across McDonough county, over into Fulton county, besides his work over Hancock county.
Like the sweet Psalmist of Israel, Dr. Riggins, after serving his own generation well, has fallen asleep. He studied his Bible and frequently quoted verses from it and relied on the Great Physician. He was a man unique in his profession, his life, his attainments and his interests. Besides his wife and daughter, he is also survived by three grandchildren, Floyd, Dorothy and Glenn Kinyon of Nauvoo, and two brothers, John and Cleveland.
His funeral was held in the Hanerhoff undertaking parlors, Tuesday at 2 p. m., and was conducted by Rev. H. C. Reichel, with burial in Harmony cemetery near Bentley.
