James E. "Jim" Rich, 79, of LaHarpe, died Friday, May 23, 2003, at the Seminary Manor in Galesburg.
He was born May 26, 1923, in Fountain Green, the son of Roy C. and Alma Yetter Rich. On August 29, 1948, he married Harriett Metcalf in Blandinsville.
He is survived by his wife; one son, James R. Rich of Galesburg; one daughter, Carla Montez of Peoria; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one brother, Clifford Rich of LaHarpe; and one sister, Margie Zimmerman of Macomb. He was preceded in death by his parents.
He farmed and raised cattle near LaHarpe and Fountain Green. He was a graduate of LaHarpe High School and served in the U.S. Army in World War II. He taught G.I. Agriculture at LaHarpe High School, was a former trustee of the LaHarpe Fire Department, and had been a dealer for the DeKalb Seed Co. He was a member of the LaHarpe American Legion Post 301 and the LaHarpe Masonic Lodge #195. He was an active sportsman and outdoorsman and will always be remembered for his sense of humor and his ability to make people laugh.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, May 27, at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe with Revs. Norman Myer and Robin Thompson officiating. Burial, with military rites, will be in the LaHarpe Cemetery.
A memorial fund has been established for the LaHarpe Masonic Lodge or the Seminary Manor.
