Carthage Woman
Dies Following
2-Car Accident

An inquest was scheduled for last night in the death of Mrs. Martha L. Reed, 75, of Carthage, who was fatally injured in a two-car collision last Thursday.  The accident occurred at 5:50 p.m. at the intersection of Route 94 and the Ferris road three miles north of CarthageMrs. Reed died at 11:15 p.m. in Memorial hospital, Carthage, more than five hours following the accident.

This was the fifth traffic fatality in Hancock county in four weeks.  No traffic fatalities had occurred in the county prior to Aug. 4.

Seven others were injured in the accident, all were treated at Memorial hospital.  The driver of the car in which Mrs. Reed was riding, her son, Floyd Reed, 46, of Carthage was issued an arrest ticket on a charge of making an improper turn.

Reed, his wife, Viola Ruth, 43, their son, Lee Ellis, 17, and their daughter, Dottiebeth, 13, all sustained minor injuries.  Mr. and Mrs. Reed were dismissed from Memorial hospital Tuesday.  The others had been dismissed earlier.

Kenneth E. Bennett, 27, of Shelbina, Mo., driver of the second car, his wife, Shirley, 28, and their son, Paul, 14 months, also sustained injuries.  The baby received a broken arm.  Bennett is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Bennett of La Harpe and was returning home after a visit with his parents.

According to police report, Reed, who was traveling north on Route 94, made a left turn in front of Bennett's southbound car which struck the right rear of the Reed auto.  There was extensive damage to both cars.

Previous traffic fatalities were Mrs. Tivis Bilderback, Aug. 4 and more recently, three members of the Higby family of Hamilton.

Mrs. Martha Reed

Funeral services for Mrs. Martha L. Reed were held Sunday, Sept. 6, at 2 p.m. in the Kilgore Memorial Home, Elder George Replogle officiating.  Music was furnished by Mrs. Kenneth Cutler.  Casket bearers were Leslie Reed, Arthur Reed, Burman Reed, Russell Jones, Martin Reed, and George King.  Burial was in Camp Creek cemetery in McDonough county.

Mrs. Reed died Thursday night in Memorial hospital of injuries received in an auto accident about 6 o'clock the same evening.

Born in Floyd county, Va., July 30, 1884, she was a daughter of A. B. and Eliza Howell.  On Jan. 14, 1902, she married Creed Taylor Reed in Floyd county.  They moved to Illinois in 1911 and the remainder of her life was spent in Carthage and the surrounding community.  Her husband died April 30, 1940.

She was a member of the Dunkark Brethren church near Astoria.

Surviving are four sons, Leonard of Hamilton, Johnson of La Harpe, and William and Floyd, both of Carthage; five grandchildren and two brothers, Gilbert of Willis, Va., and Leonard of St. Louis, Mo.

She was also preceded in death by her parents and two infant sons.

Carthage, Ill. Sept. 5. -- Mrs. Martha L. Reed, 75, of Carthage was fatally injured and four others were hurt in a two-car collision Thursday afternoon at 5:50 at the intersection of Route 94 and the Ferris road three miles north of Carthage.

Mrs. Reed, who sustained internal injuries, died Thursday night at 11:15 in Memorial hospital here.  She was a passenger in a car driven by her son, Floyd, 46, also of Carthage, who was admitted to the hospital with multiple contusions and lacerations.  He was reported in good condition Friday.

Others treated at the hospital were: Reed's wife, Viola Ruth Reed, 43, contusions and lacerations; Shirley Bennett, 28, of Shelbina, Mo., minor lacerations, and her son, Paul Bennett, 14 months, broken right arm.  Mrs. Bennett's husband, Kenneth, 27, driver of the other car, was not injured.

Police said Reed, who was going north on Route 94 made a left turn in front of Bennett's south-bound car, which struck the right rear of the Reed auto. Reed was issued an arrest ticket for improper turning.  There was extensive damage to both cars.

Funeral services for Mrs. Reed will be held Sunday afternoon at 2 in Kilgore Memorial home with Elder George Replogle officiating.  Burial will be in Camp Creek cemetery.

Mrs. Martha Reed, 75, of Carthage, the mother of Leonard Reed, former Plymouth farmer now residing in the Hamilton community, passed away late Thursday, Sept. 3, at the Memorial hospital in Carthage.  Six hours earlier she had sustained injuries that proved fatal, in an auto accident in which seven other persons were injured, not seriously.

Mrs. Reed was riding in a car with her son, Floyd D. Reed, 46, of Carthage whose car was involved in an accident at the Ferris road and Route 94, about three miles north of Carthage.

According to state police investigating the accident, Reed made a left turn into the path of a car driven by Kenneth E. Bennett, 27, of Shelbina, Mo.  Both vehicles were badly damaged.  Reed said he did not see the approaching car as sun blinded him.

Reed, his wife, Viola Ruth, 43, his son, Lee Ellis Reed, 17, and his daughter, Dottie Beth Reed, 13, all sustained minor injuries.

Bennett and his wife, Shirley, 28, sustained slight cuts and bruises, and their son, Paul, 14 months, suffered a broken arm.  Bennett is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Bennett of La Harpe and was returning home after a visit with his parents.

All were treated at Carthage Memorial hospital.

State police and Hancock County Deputy Matt Tweedell investigated the accident.

Funeral services for Mrs. Reed were held at 2 p. m. Sunday at the Kilgore Memorial Home in CarthageElder George Replogle of the Dunkard Brethren Church of Astoria officiated and burial was in Camp Creek cemetery in McDonough County.

Martha is not buried in the Camp Creek cemetery.  She is buried in the Dunkard cemetery near Colmar, IL.
